What is Networking?

What do we mean when we say we are networking?

Meeting people
Maintaining existing relationships Creating and developing contacts for the mutual benefit of both parties

Why Should We Network?

Why is it important that we network? Making Contacts and opening doors Build a reputation Find New Opportunities Get work No guaranteed long term employment need to raise profile and make connections. Jobs are very rarely advertised, positive word of mouth and recommendations are highly regarded in the Creative Industries. Increase in personal responsibility to create the job you want. Get new ideas and learn from others.

Where Do We Network?

Basically networking takes place in all parts of everyday life, here are some examples:

Conferences Seminars Pubs Train, Tubes, Bus etc Parties Meetings Gym Over the phone Email / Internet Anywhere!

Essential Networking Skills

Smile Eye Contact Listen Body Language Avoid Being Pushy Be Complimentary Be Enthusiastic Have a good memory Become skilled in Small Talk!

The Stages of a Networking Opportunity

There are four main stages of networking: Opening introducing yourself

Steering guiding the conversation to where you want it to go

Closing concluding the conversation Keeping In Touch following up on your new contact.

Setting Targets

Every one of us must network. Try and set yourself some targets, for example: Every gig you are at, set yourself a target of meeting at least two new people. Investigate people that may be of importance to you and devise a plan to make contact with them. Go to conferences and set yourself a plan of meeting certain people who you believe will benefit you.

Speed Networking

One of the best ways to perfect your networking skills. It involves speaking to a new contact for two minutes before moving on to someone else. In that time, you must get across who you are, what you do and what you want to do in the future. Lets take a look at a quick video on speed networking

Speed Networking

In groups of 5/6, we are going to Speed Network. Once in your groups, you will have 2 minutes with each person in your group to discuss who you are, what you do and what you want to do in future. At the end of the 2 minutes, at which time you should move on to the next person. In each round of networking, one person will sit out and observe.

Speed Networking
