The research paper is a formal composition written to inform or persuade readers regarding a selected topic. A successful research paper is not only well organized and well written, but is also properly documented. The careful writer documents, or records, the source of any information that he gathers in his research. When this information is unique to a particular source, that source is cited, or identified, within the research paper.

What is a research paper?


A research paper is a carefully planned essay that shares information or proves a point.

RESEARCH PAPER (Plan)


STEP 1. Select and limit the subject.
a. Select the subject that interests you. b. Choose a subject that merits attention. (1) Does it pose any important questions that you might answer? (2) Will it be interesting and valuable to your audience? c. Select a subject that has sufficient resource material available. d. Limit your subject to one that can be adequately treated within the assigned number of pages.

Finding a Topic
Write about what you know.

Whenever possible, seek out a research topic that interests you and that you care about. Aim to build on knowledge that you already have. If the topic is assigned, try to develop an angle that will interest you, then run the idea by your instructor.
