TOPIC:ICE JET MACHINING

Presentation by NAGENDRA .P 4JC11IP405 R.N :60 SRI JAYACHAMARAJENDRA COLLAGE OF ENGINEERING

INTRODUCTION
Abrasives are used for many applications including cleaning, depainting and cutting operations. There are, some applications where the use of abrasives is not possible. These applications include, cleaning of sensitive surfaces. for example processing of meat products. An ice jet is a non-destructive, non-abrasive, environmentally friendly way of machining. The ice jet can be used for either initial or final cleaning, and for numerous critical and non critical cleaning applications. An important consideration was to get particles as small as possible so that these ice particles, when entrained with high velocity water, can produce a very fine surface finish, because the smaller the particles size the better the surface quality.

Advantages
IJM Is a non-abrasive, nonflammable and nonconductive cleaning method Is environmentally-friendly and contains no secondary contaminants such as solvents or grit media Is clean and approved for use in the food industry Allows most items to be cleaned in place without time-consuming disassembly Can be used without damaging active electrical or mechanical parts or creating fire hazards Can be used to remove production residues, release agents, contaminants, paints, oils and biofilms Can be as gentle as dusting smoke damage from books or as aggressive as removing weld slag from tooling Can be used for many general cleaning applications TECNALIA seeks to convert the Abrasive Water Jet (AWJ) technology in a more sustainable process by replacing mineral particles with ice particles, thus achieving a significant waste reduction.

Applications
The ice jet can be used for either initial or final cleaning for and numerous critical and non critical cleaning applications in the semiconductor, disk drive, vacuum technologies, surface science, surface analysis, optical, medical, automotive, analytical instrument, and manufacturing industries. Ice Jet's Engineered Systems are turn-key solutions that are developed to be fully automated. This provides you with the choice of integrating our cleaning solutions with robotics, or using them manually if desired. Cold Jet Dry Engineered Systems turn your complicated cleaning problems into solutions.

Conclusion
There are a few more parameters, such as the flow rate of water and flow rate of liquid nitrogen and their effects on the formation of ice particles which are yet to be studied. There are problems in terms of clogging which have to be eliminated. Although these are experimental, numerical simulations of the same are yet to be conducted to study the behavior of the ice particles. Further studies are focused in entraining these ice particles into stream of water cleaning and cutting operations.
