2.1 Attacks
What caught the attention of federal authorities, however, was his breaking into computers Agency Defense Threat Reduction, a division of the U.S. Defense Department, whose main function is to analyze potential threats to the United States. James later admitted to authorities that he had installed an unauthorized backdoor in a computer server in Dulles, Virginia, and used it to install a sniffer that allowed him to intercept over three thousand messages passing to and from DTRA employees, along with numerous usernames and passwords of other employees DTRA.

2.2 Attacks
It was later revealed that the precise software obtained was the International Space Station's source code controlling critical life-sustaining elements. According to NASA, "the software supported the International Space Station's physical environment, including control of the temperature and humidity within the living space." This intrusion, when detected, caused NASA to shut down its computers for three weeks that July, costing $41,000 to check and fix its systems.

3. Arrest
James house was raided around six in the morning of January 26, 2000 by agents of the Department of Defense, NASA and local police. James was indicted six months later. The September 21, 2000, an agreement was reached with the U.S. Attorney Guy Lewis said James would plead guilty to two counts of juvenile delinquency in exchange for a lenient sentence. Legal experts have suggested that, given the extent of his intrusions, could have been jailed for at least ten years for his crimes if he had been an adult. Both the Attorney General Janet Reno and Attorney Guy Lewis said the case of James was the test by which the Department of Justice was willing to get tough with juvenile offenders accused of cybercrimes.

4. Sentence
James was sentenced to six months house arrest and probation until the age of eighteen, and was required to write letters of apology to NASA and the Department of Defense. He was also banned from using computers for recreational purposes. However, the judge in the case later reversed her decision and allowed James to stay six months under house arrest, with probation until the age of twenty one. James later violated that probation when he tested positive for drug use and was then subsequently taken into custody by the United States Marshals Service and flown to an Alabama federal correctional where he served six months.

5. Alleged Charges
In 2007, the department store chain TJX was the victim of an intrusion that compromised personal information and credit of millions of customers. The same hackers also introduced in a lot of companies and his, alleged ringleader, Albert Gonzalez . Although he denied having done anything, James was investigated by the Secret Service, who raided the house of James, his brother, and his girlfriend's house. Although apparently not discovered any connection with the intrusion, they discovered a firearm legally registered, and notes indicate that he had considered suicide, the father of James would later say that his son had depression. The criminal complaint filed against the hackers setting by TJX, mention an additional conspirator unnamed was not accused, identified only by the initials "JJ". In 2004, this coconspirator assisted one of the hackers stealing credit card numbers, account numbers and encrypted PIN anOfficeMax Store via Wi-Fi. These numbers, it was learned later that Albert Gonzalez allegedly gave to "JJ" who also had his own post. James's father believes "JJ" could have been his son.

6. SUICIDE
On May 18, 2008, Jonathan James was found dead in his shower with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His suicide was apparently motivated by the belief that he would be prosecuted for crimes he had not committed. "I honestly, honestly had nothing to do with TJX," James wrote in his suicide note, "I have no faith in the justice system. Perhaps my actions today, and this letter, will send a stronger message to the public. Either way, I have lost control over this situation, and this is my only way to regain control. I die free.
