What is Criminology?

Criminology includes the study of: The characteristics of the criminal law; The extent of crime The effects of crime on victims and on society; Methods of crime prevention; The attributes of criminals; The characteristics and workings of the criminal justice system.

Assessment
This Unit will be assessed by using four instruments of assessment, one for each Unit Outcome.
These will take the form of three open-book assessments covering

Explain how crime and criminal justice have been theorised Critically evaluate theories of crime causation Critically evaluate theories of criminalisation

The closed-book assessment will cover the roles and aims of the criminal justice and penal system.

Theoretical explanation of crime and punishment Theoretical explanation of inspection and surveillance

Theoretical explanation of criminal typing

Theoretical explanation of the normal and the pathological

Outcome 2

Critically evaluate theories of crime causation

Genetics study of crime causation

Personality theory or crime causation

Social/environmental theory of crime causation Gender specific theory of crime causation

Outcome 3

Critically evaluate theories of criminalisation

Labelling and deviant identity theory of criminalisation

Theory of delinquency and criminalisation

Theory of political economy and criminalisation Radical theory of criminalisation

Outcome 4

Explain the aims of the criminal justice and penal system.

Explanation of the role of key agencies within the Scottish Criminal Justice System Explanation of the aims of the Scottish Criminal Justice System Explanation of the range of disposals available to the Scottish Criminal Justice System

Activity:Discuss the following questions in pairs/small groups Jot down some response and be ready to discuss them with the class.

What is Enlightenment thought? What kinds of beliefs, opinions and assumptions did it challenge? How would you describe the role and power of the individual in early Liberal/capitalist society? Classical criminologists were interested in proportionate justice; how would you describe this?

What is positivism and what was the shift of focus it introduced in criminological thought? What are the main social sciences within the positivist approach in criminology? What does criminalisation mean?

Why is this such a significant shift away from positivism?

List a few examples that highlight the relative nature of crime and deviance.

Can you think of any recent events or circumstances that show powerful groups being treated differently from less powerful groups? Is crime a predominantly male phenomenon? How would you describe the place of women in crime and criminality?

Describe the most likely victim of violent crime What are there more of each year teenager on teenager murder or partner on partner murder? Do most victims of murder know their assailant? Where is a child most likely to come to some kind of abusive harm in their own home or elsewhere? What are the implications for policy making in light of the above?
