Obesity Commentary

1. Biological methods and processes used The problem of obesity causing disease is identified but not really explained at all. It is not obvious why it is a problem. (1.1a=1 and 1.1b=0). There is a mention of leptin as a wonder drug but no other real discussion of methodology (1.2a=1). No data is given (1.2b=0) nor is there any discussion of why methods are appropriate (1.3a=0 and 1.3b=1).

2. Applications and implications of the biology encountered There is some mention of the social problems together with ethics and economics but little discussion (2.1a=2 and 2.1b=0). No advantages of research into the ob gene are explained (2.2a=0). There is a mention of the leptin treatment not always working because it is not only the leptin deficit that matters but the body not responding to it. However, there is not much of a discussion and no real evidence (2.2b=1). One alternative treatment involving sleep levels is mentioned together leptin levels but not discussed enough (2.3a=1). The extract from the cactus Hoodia is also mentioned but not discussed further (2.3b=1).

3. Evaluation of source material There is a range of sources both web-based and non web-based (3.1a=1, 3.1b=1 and 3.1c=1) but it is not obvious how quotes are used within the report as part of the discussion (3.1d=0). Most of the sources are described fully in the bibliography (3.2a=1) but they are not referred to in the text (3.2b=0). One source, not mentioned is commented on for validity (3.3a=1) but no evidence is given apart from the brief statement that P57 is an appetite suppressant (3.3b=0).

4. Communicate clearly, concisely and logically The report is not very well set out and spelling, punctuation and grammar are not good enough (4.1b=0). There are no visuals or data referred to and the technical language is poor (4.2b=0).
Overall mark 13 marks out of 40 a low grade piece of work.
