MULTIPLE PUNT FORMATIONS: WHY

1.Limit Defenses ability to rush and block the punt 2.Spread out Defense and improve your coverage ability- lessen chance of a big return.

3. More difficult to put a returner in who is

not a D-Back 4. Force them to only be able to put one returner back- easier to kick away from a dangerous returner- if they put two back- they are vulnerable to a fake somewhere in their alignment

5. Reinforces our team philosophy of being willing to take risks and to stay on the attack always- builds trust between coaches and players! 6. It is fun- players love to practice and do them in games- feel they have an important role in game and on the team.

PERSONNEL AND ALIGNMENT RULES

1. Use an athlete at punter- preferably your starting QB- Someone who can handle pressure, is not afraid to call fakes and is someone with a short memory and who can run and throw the ball. 2. Wide Recs/ DBs/ LBs /RBs are on the punt team- NOT Offensive Linemen unless they are quick and fast.

3. Splits are 2 feet between snapper and guards , guards and tackles, and tackles and wings. 4. Alignment- want to be as far back as possible- push it until the Ref tells you to move up.

5. Split of the wideouts vary- but the widest wideout generally get s out to the numbers . 6. Punter lines up 10 yds deep- no more than that. Will take one step and punt! 7. Punter has complete freedom to call punt fakes or call off a fake called by the coach!

8. Coverage- First down are the wideouts and the snapper - Next comes the wings and interior linemen - Last is the punter as the final safety.

- No Huddle - Punter calls formation

- Punter calls out fake or punt

- Silent snap

SPECIAL TEAM PRACTICE TIMES- WEEKLY

- Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday we begin each practice with special teams- we practice them in the middle of practice, and we end all three days with special teams. - We spend approximately 40 minutes a practice ( 2 hrs total practice time ) on special teams.

- Thursday- we run through all the special teams/ then add a special team circus- practice special situations- safeties, onsides, etc.

WHO PLAYS- STARTERS OR BACKUPS?

- We mix in starters and second string players on all our special teams-

- Want athletic players out there but if we can play backups in key roles and get them experience and confidence we will do it!
- In varsity games the last two years, counting special team players, we are playing between 40 and 45 kids during the game- We are building depth and getting kids ready for the next year.
