Pregnancy can bring on strange changes in a woman's body, both inside and out.

Swelling, hair loss and general feelings of detachment are quite normal, but the most common change is in a pregnant woman's appetite. Suddenly, she will crave a food she's never liked in the past, hate a food that used to be a favorite or crave something to eat that isn't a food at all!

What is Food Aversion?

Like most other symptoms of pregnancy, these dietary preferences can be blamed on hormonal changes ' especially in the first trimester, when hormone changes are at their most dramatic Common food aversions in pregnancy include most potent smelling items, such as ethnic foods, fish and garlic, but can also be everyday items, including coffee or even cereal

What is Food Craving?

To help curb food cravings consider the following: Eat breakfast daily. Starting your day with a satisfying meal will help ward off hunger and keep your cravings at bay. Exercise regularly. This will help you keep your mind off of food for awhile and burn off extra calories. Choose healthy alternatives. Fill cravings for junk foods with healthy substitutes. Instead of a donut, eat a bran muffin, or try eating air-popped popcorn instead of potato chips. Have a strong support system. When you need encouragement, turn to friends and family instead of comfort foods for relief

Get plenty of exercise Have plenty of emotional support

What causes Food Aversion?

As is the case with many changes during pregnancy, hormones play a huge role in food cravings and aversions. Some doctors believe the body tends to crave foods the body needs due to nutritional changes. Along those same lines, caffeine and alcohol are common aversions. There also seems to be an environmental effect on food cravings and choices.

Foods to Avoid
A balanced diet is important to everyone, regardless of whether they are pregnant However, during pregnancy, there are certain foods that pose health risks and should always be avoided:
Raw and undercooked seafood, meat, and eggs Unpasteurized milk and any foods made from it, including most soft cheeses Unpasteurized juice

Raw vegetable sprouts

Alcohol

What can you do during Food Cravings

Try to avoid going crazy with pregnancy cravings that do nothing for you nutritionally even while you indulge them. For example, go for a mini chocolate bar instead of a kingsized, or a glass of low-fat chocolate milk rather than a tray of brownies.
When cravings strike, head for the hills (or another distracting place). Take a walk or go to the gym. Even reading a book or calling a friend for a chat may take your mind off that glazed doughnut that's calling your name. Give in to your cravings once in a while (though not for alcohol) then eat well for the rest of the day. Call your practitioner if you crave weird substances such as clay, ashes, or laundry starch. This craving, known as pica, may be a sign of a nutritional deficiency, particularly of iron.

When are Cravings Dangerous?

Sometimes pregnancy cravings stretch beyond food A condition called pica is when a person craves substances with little or no nutritional value Most of these cravings involve non-food substances, such as dirt, chalk, mothballs, toothpaste, soap, sand, plaster, cigarette ashes and coffee grounds
Pica cravings can be detrimental to your baby's and your health, as consuming non-food substances may interfere with the nutrient absorption of healthy food substances and actually cause a deficiency In addition, non-food items may contain toxic or parasitic ingredients

Don't panic if you are experiencing pica cravings; however, you should notify your health care provider to learn more about the specific risks associated with your cravings
