TA 7890-BAN: Strengthening the Resilience of the Urban Water Supply, Drainage, and Sanitation to Climate Change in Coastal Towns
By Md. Shah Wali Masud Phah Lovi Hydrogeologist

Introduction
Bangladesh is major part of Bengal basin and formed during tertiary period. Coastal zone of Bangladesh lies within the tropical zone between 21-23 N and 89-93 E, which fells in the Barishal High tectonic element Bengal Basin. Project area is under lower deltaic plane of Ganges Delta and deposition is of Holocene deltaic deposit.

Climate change effects on Hydrogeology and ground water

Humidity Precipitation Evaporation/Evapotranspiration Infiltration Runs off and Base flow Properties of overlaying soil Unsaturated zone Ground Water Recharges Sea level rise Saline Intrusion

Observed temperatures are increasing over the whole GBM basin and over Bangladesh. The rate of increase is likely to be about 1C/100 years which may be applicable to the southern coastal region
A one meter sea level rise is estimated to impact 13 million people in coastal area of Bangladesh.

Hydrogeological Status
Amtoli Pourashava
Geologically deltaic deposited area i.e. Ganges-Bhramaputra-Mehgna Basin. Freshwater is below upper brackishwater which is below 300m (320-350m) and the aquifer protected by impermeable layer. Present population 17,311 and projected population 36,419 Projected water demand 437 Ml/day Electrical resistivity > 30ohm/m Aquifer loss minimum, drawdown minimum. Specific capacity above 8 cum/hr/m at pumping 50 cum/hr Water quality: Fe (0.1-0.3)mg/l, Cl (3070)mg/l, As(<0.001mg/l) Additional 5 nos. PTW is required for fulfil future water demand and deep aquifer will be not effected.

Project Area

Hydrogeological Status
Galachipa Pourashava
Geologically Quaternary deposition of the Bengal basin i.e. Pleistocene to recent deposition GangesBhramaputra-Mehgna Basin. Freshwater is below upper brackishwater which is below 300m (300-335m) and the aquifer protected by impermeable layer. Present population 21,200 and projected population 43,888 Projected water demand 526 Ml/day Electrical resistivity > 30ohm/m Aquifer loss minimum, drawdown minimum. Specific capacity above 10 cum/hr/m at pumping 50 cum/hr Water quality: Fe (0.2-0.25)mg/l, Cl (2025)mg/l, As(<0.01mg/l) Additional 5 nos. PTW is required for fulfil future water demand and deep aquifer will be not effected.

Pirojpur Pourashava
Geologically Quaternary deposition of the Bengal basin i.e. Pleistocene to recent deposition Ganges-Bhramaputra-Mehgna Basin and have allowed deep erosion and then infill deposion on the Pleistocene surface area is geosinclinal downward area. Hydro geologically the area is developed by tidal deltaic deposition and no fresh water is found up to 400m below ground level. Above the situation ground water is not feasible for water supply.
