What is 3G?
3G stands for third generation. First generation was NMT and second generation was GSM. Revolution in wireless technology.
Is able to transfer voice and data. Maximun transfer capasity is around 2Mbit/s in
optimal conditions.
What is 3G (CONTD.)
Just as the second generation of wireless technology improved upon earlier systems, the industry looked to a third generation of technology for more advances. Although wireless was used almost exclusively for voice communication, the ability to deliver data over the air was also very promising, especially as Internet users and content proliferated.
and email over cellular networks around the world. iPhone 3G also makes it possible to do more in more places: Surf the web, download email, get directions, and watch video even while youre on a call.
2G
In mobile telephony, second-generation protocols use digital encoding and include GSM, D-AMPS (TDMA) and CDMA. 2G networks are in current use around the world. These protocols support high bit rate voice and limited data communications. They offer auxiliary services such as data, fax and SMS. Most 2G protocols offer different levels of encryption.
2.5G
In mobile telephony, 2.5G protocols extend 2G systems to provide additional features such as packet-switched connection (GPRS) and enhanced data rates (HSCSD, EDGE).
Main services(3G)
Video call
Able to surf in the Internet with acceptable speed. Rich multimedia messages Video Streaming Instant messaging Television streaming
For whom?
Target group is mainly people who need flexibility in
their life. Is there any services that older people can use?
Why 3G?
Higher bandwidth enables a range of new applications!! For the consumer
Video streaming, TV broadcast Video calls, video clips news, music, sports Enhanced gaming, chat, location services
For business
High speed teleworking Sales force automation Video conferencing Real-time financial information
WCDMA: European version, Adapted CDMA with a bandwidth of 5MHz using FDD CDMA 2000, North America version, used CDMA with 3x 1.25 MHz bandwidth Using FDD UTRA-TDD/TD-SCDMA: adapted CDMA with a bandwidth of 5 MHz or 1.6MHz using TDD
Evolution to 3G
IS-95B Uses multiple code channels Data rates up to 64kbps Many operators gone direct to 1xRTT CDMA2000 1xEV-DO: Evolved Data Optimised Third phase in CDMA2000 evolution Standardised version of Qualcomm High Data Rate (HDR) Adds TDMA components beneath code components Good for highly asymmetric high speed data apps Speeds to 2Mbps +, classed as a 3G system Use new or existing spectrum
1xEV-DO 1xRTT
CDMA2000 1xRTT: single carrier RTT First phase in CDMA2000 evolution Easy co-existence with IS-95A air interface Release 0 - max 144 kbps Release A max 384 kbps Same core network as IS-95

UMTS
UMTS is the European vision of 3G. UMTS is an upgrade from GSM via GPRS or EDGE. The standardization work for UMTS is carried out by Third
Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Data rates of UMTS are: 144 kbps for rural 384 kbps for urban outdoor 2048 kbps for indoor and low range outdoor Virtual Home Environment (VHE)
Conclusion
There are a lot of features that will improve quality of
life of the people Products must be easy to use. We should still remember that this technology is new and its full potential havent yet been used. So there will be much more services in the future.
