What is happing in Mental Health Today?


Civil rights movement of 1960s
No government controlled facilities Receive care from family or are indigent no health insurance underinsured unemployable Lack of medical attention and medication noncompliance often leads to psychological emergencies. Referred to community health agencies

Preparing for a Public Sector Mental Health Reform in New Mexico


Research found:
41% of provider agencies were community mental health agencies in urban areas 35% of provider agencies were community mental health agencies in rural areas 2/3rd of agencies were non profit

Social Rehabilitation
Conducted by following older people with mental illness
Half group in education program Half following current treatment

Patients who participated functioned better in the community setting and less psychological emergencies were reported
Patients were able to obtain employment

What does this mean to nursing?


Community Health Nursing will need to be examined in a more detailed system in nursing school
More Community involvement More psychological training More therapeutic communication skills
