Learning Capacities
Rooting reflex is present at birth and helps infant find

the nipple Sucking is present at birth and permits infant feeding

Learning Capacities Continued...

Classical Conditioning Pairing a neutral stimulus with a stimulus that leads to a reflexive response

Breast milk results in sucking Pair the presence of breast milk with a neutral stimulus such as forehead stroking Forehead stroking will cause sucking to occur

Operant Conditioning Learning in which a spontaneous behavior is followed by a stimulus that influences the probability that the behavior will occur again

Sweet milk reinforces the sucking response This results in an increase in sucking behavior

Biting
Biting while nursing might begin around 4 6 months
Cant breastfeed and bite at the same time. Reasons for biting include: tiredness, boredom, curiosity

Baby is still learning how to use teeth.

Biting Continued
Remove your baby from breast and firmly say, No

biting. Lets him know that you do not like his behavior Known as Punishment in operant conditioning Teaching baby the cause and effect of his actions: If he bites while nursing, Mom will remove the breast. After you remove your breast, wait a few seconds and try again Connect your actions with the infants behavior.

How to stop biting before it happens

Remove your breast after rhythmic sucking has stopped.
Then move him to the second breast before he has a

chance to get bored or tired which are the red alerts for biting.
