All questions are compulsory Question 1 and 2 carries 4 marks each while Question No. 3 carries 2 marks Originality of the answer and your contribution will be tested during assessment Last date for submission: On or before Friday 22nd March 2013 at 10.30 am

1.

The output of a potentiometer is to be read by a recorder of 10,000 Ohms input resistance. Nonlinearity must be held to 1 percent. A family of potentiometers having thermal Rating of 5W and resistances ranging from 100 to 10,000 ohm in 10 Ohm steps are available. Choose from this family the potentiometers that has the greatest possible sensitivity and meets the other requirements. What is this sensitivity if the potentiometers are single turn (360) units?

2. A piezoelectric transducer has a capacitance of 1,000 pF, and Kq of 10 -5 C/in. The connecting cable has a capacitance of 300 pF while the oscilloscope used for readout has an input impedance of 1MOhm parallel with 50 pF. v What is the sensitivity of the transducer alone? vWhat is the high frequency sensitivity of the entire measuring system? vWhat is the lowest frequency that can be measured with 5 % amplitude error by the entire system? vWhat value of C must be connected in parallel to extend the range of 5 % error down to 10 Hz? vIf the C value in above part is used , what will be system high frequency sensitivity be?

3. Derive the equation for (Xo/Xi) for the seismic type accelerometer
