Tapping Into Your Own

Vision and Creativity

Kelley School of Business X420 Class Discussion Session #77

Philip Orsina, President and CEO of Masonite Corporation said the following:

Vision and Creativity may seem to be vague concepts. Yet we know them when we see them.

VISION

A vivid mental image Intelligent foresight The ability to enhance visual images of things or events Imagination The ability to visualize something that you own. Its your own personal property The act or power of creating something new

Creativity

Cognitive activity resulting in a new way of viewing problems and situations The ability to think and approach a problem in an original and flexible way The ability to bring something new into existence The process of producing something that is both original and valuable

per George Prince, The Practice of Creativity An arbitrary harmony

an unexpected astonishment a habitual revelation a familiar surprise an unexpected certainty a disciplined freedom a difficult delight a predictable gamble a miraculous expectation an ephemeral solidity an accustomed amazement

Vision guides Creativity

In a certain sense, one can say that vision must guide creativity
The eyethe window of the soul, is the principal means by which the central sense can most completely and abundantly appreciate the infinite works of nature (Leonardo da Vinci, 1452-1519)

..they dont call it hearing or scent, they call it vision.

Vision, imagination, and creativity

Vision is the art of seeing the invisible. -- Jonathon Swift Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire; you will what you imagine; and at last you create what you will. -- George Bernard Shaw

There have been many theoretical discussions of how problems are solved creatively These approaches to using creativity can be summarized in several ways: The Structural The Inspirational The Situational

The proponents of Inspirational methods of creativity face the danger of the dilettante:

Too much creativity, not enough follow-through

Those espousing the Situational approach often fall prey to the weaknesses of committees
Too many cooks spoil the broth.

Combining various elements of creativity strategies can lead to the following sketch of a creative methodology:
Gathering information Consulting Visualization Free Association What if? Explorations Review Results Distribution

Yeah, yeah, a lot of this can be taught. ...but without vision and creativity, it is an arid exercise in routine.

.SOlets focus on the Question

Can people be taught to have Vision and to be Creative?

Creativity is strongest in children.

90 % of people at age 5 are highly creative 10% of people at age 7 are highly creative but, between 8 and 45 years old, only 2% are highly creative

so, lets play a little.

WHY DIDNT I THINK OF

THAT?

A little knife work.

Cut the cake so that it makes eight equal pieces using only three cuts.

Change your point of view to see the cakes three dimensions, and then

Cut 1 Cut 2 Cut 3 (splits the quarters)

New point of view.

What is this?

New point of view.

By pulling our point of view farther away we can see that its a plateau on Mars..

Glasses.
Arrange things so that the glasses alternate filled and empty by moving only one glass.

Glasses.
By moving only one glass to fill an empty one, we complete the task.
Looking beyond the obvious, dismissing assumptions.finding creative solutions.

Its a numbers game.

Determine why these numbers have been put into the order they are in.

8 5 9 1 6 3 0

Its a numbers game.

Determine why these numbers have been put into the order they are in.

8 5 9 1 6 3 0
8 5 9 1 6 3 0 = = = = = = = Eight Five Nine One Six Three Zero

Dismiss your assumption that the numbers should always be considered numerals, and try alphabetical order.
