From Radio to TV .

Technological advances at the time allowed


people to watch current events , rather then just
listen to them on the radio .
At the beginning of television , there was only one
channel which was the BBC , which had limited
programming and was in black and white .

The picture the early televisions delivered was


blurred and the overall picture quality was bland as
well as being hard to hear and overall horrid to
watch .
But its better then listening to the radio , this was a
huge leap in the technology at the time .
• TV quiz shows really started in the 1950`s with shows like “
what's my line ? ” and “ Animal , Vegetable or Mineral ? ”
• Some were formats imported from the USA , others were home-
grown .
• In the beginning there was only one TV channel in the UK
around this time .
Note : in 1951 , there was only one TV channel in the UK at the time .

• Started on the BBC in 1951 and ran until 1963 .

• The show was hosted by Eamonn Andrews .

• It was a panel show , than a quiz show , thought the contestants were
usually members of the public .

How is what's My Line played ?

• The four panellists had to question contestants , trying


to guess what they did for a living .
• The questions had to have a YES or NO answer .
• Each panellists took turns , but questions passed to
the next panellists with every NO answer .

What's My Line is originally started in the USA ,


however it was adopted and used in :
United kingdom
Germany
Canada ( French-speaking )
Brazil
South Korea
Venezuela

What's my line was sponsored by Kellogg's


cornflakes.
•The first ITV quiz show was “Double Your Money” , that’s prizes included
money .
•It ran from 1955 – 1968 and was hosted by Hughie Green .
•The rules were very similar to who wants to be a millionaire , the money was
doubled with every correct answer .
•For the first time , viewers got to see ordinary people to get prize money , that
could build up and reach £32.00 !!
•This was a massive step in television history , as law was passed in America
that allowed public gambling on TV , this allowed game shows to start giving
money as a prize .
•On game shows today money is much higher .
•£32.00 is just over £600.00 in today's money .
•There was regulations that limited the amount of prize money that could be won ,
until the 1990`s .
•The jackpot on “Double Your Money” was actually £1000.00 , but the “Double
Your Money” only went up to £32.00
•Contestants were placed in an “isolated booth” to avoid distractions .
•£1000.00 in 1955 is the equivalent to £18,870.00 in 2009 .
