COMPETENCE EXAMINATION
AND STUDENT ACADEMIC
ACHIEVEMENT : ANY
CORRELATION?

(Wiwik Kusumawati, MEU Faculty of

Medicine UMY)
• The objective of medical doctor competency examination named as UKDI is to
assess the competency of medical doctor graduates in knowledge domain
based on the 7 core competencies of medical doctor established by Director
General of Higher Education (DGHE). The aim of this study was to identify
whether there was a correlation between the result scores of the tryout of
medical doctor competence examination and the graduates’ academic
achievement assessed from their grade point average (GPA).
• The scores of 55 participants of the tryout UKDI conducted on May 2006
who were originated from faculty of medicine UMY were analyzed whether there
was any correlation with their GPA. The study results revealed that there was a
moderate correlation between scores of tryout exam with medical doctor
graduates’ GPA (r 0,59); a moderate correlation between the tryout exam
scores with the graduates’ GPA during clerkship (r 0,45) and a strong
correlation between the tryout exam scores with the graduates’ GPA during
under graduate medical education (r 0,62). of graduates. These result indicated
the medical students’ academic achievement had a correlation with the scores
of the tryout of medical doctor competence examination. Therefore, the
implementation of competence-based curriculum should be more optimized on
the process as well as on the assessment.
• We suggest that medical doctor competency examination should assess
knowledge, skills and attitude domain comprehensively. In the implementation
of the competence- based curriculum, evaluation of competency achievement
tends to be formative assessment.
