P&G's use of agent-based modeling helped it transform its supply chain system so fundamentally that the company no longer even calls it a supply chain. Instead they call it supply network.
He believes it has to operate like a network, like an internet, so everybody has visibility to the information.
QUESTIONS
Q1 - Do you agree with Procter & Gamble that a supply chain should be called a supply network? Why or why not? Ans Chain means something that requires the handling of information in a sequence but a network is interconnected so everybody has visibility of information. In case of P&G by using computer simulations, behavior of each agent was programmed according to rules that mimic their actual behavior. By doing so the company was able to analyze the impact of any change on : Inventory Level. Transportation Costs. In store stock outs. Hence the flow of information is not sequential , the information about the key metrics is available simultaneously to everybody. Hence we can say that P&G is right in calling a supply chain as a supply network.
Q2- What is the business value of agent-based modeling? Use P&G and other companies in this case as examples. Ans- The benefits include cost savings, reduced inventories, and better customer service. In case of P&G agent-based modeling led to : Relaxation of rigid rules, in order to improve the overall performance of the supply network. More flexibility in manufacturing so that it no longer produces long runs of single product but instead is able to produce every product every day. The benefits include fewer stock-outs and happier customers. More flexibility in distribution. For example, its possible to restock a retailer in 24 hours rather than the customary 48 to 72 hours.
Other Examples: Southwest Airlines Co. used software agents to optimize cargo routing. Air Liquide America LP, reduced both production and distribution costs with agentbased modeling. Ford Motor Co. used agents to simulate buyer preferences, suggesting packages of car options that optimized the trade-offs between production costs and customer demands customer demands.
