The historical past of Penamacor county can be read through its monuments. No one knows for sure when Penamacor Castle was built but was considered one of the most important strongholds of Beira. In 1973 the ruins were considered National Heritage Monument.

This small village was once an important Roman city. There is a vast patrimony were the Visigoth Cathedral still impresses today for its richness and dimension. The Walls and the Donjon Tower were rebuilt during the medieval era. Other attractions: Porta and Roman Bridge over the Ponsul River, Pillory (16th century), S. Dmaso Chapel (18th century).

Monsanto historic village

Monsanto Castle and Walls

This village received, in 1938, the title of The most Portuguese village in Portugal. The medieval castle was partially destroyed due an accidental explosion on a Christmas Eve, in 19th century. Today two towers remain the Peo (Pawn) tower and the Donjon tower. Inside the wall the Romanic chapel of S. Miguel (12th century). Outside the wall, is the St. Michael Chapel, from the 12th / 13th century. The granite and schist houses, nested in the middle of huge granite blocks, gives a very special grace.

Penha Garcia historic village

Penha Garcia is located on the mountainside of the same name, branch of Malcata Mountains and on the right bank of the Ponsul river. In Penha Garcia starts "Fossils Trail," a two-mile hiking trail, where the stones are a major tourist attraction. The traces recorded in these rocks date back 480 million years, 250 million years before the dinosaurs!

Covilh has an area of 550 km and 54.506 inhabitants. The territory is divided into 31 parishes.

The walls, built perhaps by order of D. Sancho I, formed a polygon. In 1755 the earthquake destroyed part of the walls. In the construction of the Royal Textile Factory was used stone walls. Founded by the Marquis of Pombal in 1764, the factory labored until 1885, when the building was converted into barracks.

Fundo has an area of 700,13 km and 29.213 inhabitants. Which is divided into 31 parishes.

A prehistoric village, estimated to be about seven thousand years, was discovered by accident in the Telhado parish. Archaeologists have found several polished stone axes, ceramic objects and Neolithic cereals hand mills.
