$800 million per year in the early 1990s.  By the
late 1990s, expenditures had risen to $1.5
billion.  By 2002, the Chinese were spending $3.6
billion annually on imported weapons. Throughout
the decade of the1990s China imported an
average of $775 million worth of arms each year.
