The Techniques of Combined
Transport
• Definition of Combined transport
• Combined transport offers today different loading units like freight
containers or swap bodies
• Swap bodies are standard freight containers

Swap bodies
Additional loading units
Semi-trailers: - trailer without a front axle
- road tractor is coupled to it

Containerization: - system of intermodal freight transport cargo

transport using standard ISO containers
- Improved cargo security doors of the
containers are sealedreduced the "falling off the truck" syndrome

20 feet standard
Semi - trailer
container
Roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ships
• are ferries(vessels) designed to carry wheeled cargo such as
automobiles, trucks, semi-trailer trucks, trailers or railroad cars
• Ramps allow the efficient „roll-on and roll-off” in ports

History of RORO: -first in 1851 – carried steam trains

-During WWII – first road vehicles were
carried

P&O ferry carries 650 cars

Variations of Ro-Ro
PCTC
Vessels include ferries, cruiseferries, cargo ships, and barges.
Ro-Ro ships as car carriers :
• Pure Car Carrier (PCC)
• Pure Car Truck Carrier (PCTC)

ROPAX:(roll on/roll off passenger)

• Carries freight vehicles and passengers

Pcc loading
Conro: mix of RoRo and container
• below-decks area used for vehicle while upper for freight containers
Rolling highway – Ro-La
• Originates from the German „Rollende Autobahn„ - RoLa
• Transports trucks by train
• At both ends of the rail are purpose-built terminals which allow the
train to be easily loaded and unloaded.
• There is a driveable track along the entire train
• Truck drivers are accommodated in a passenger car
Pros and contras of Ro-La
+Save time(no traffic jam; drivers can sleep), toll, fuel
+Save vehicle operating hours
+Mostly it’s not regulated to carry at weekends and nights
-Long loading and unloading time
-Lot of dead weight is carried (Trucks with the cargo)

Solution: intermodal freight transport with semi trailers and without

the tractor itself
Interesting datas about
Ro-Ro and Ro-La
• In 1999 between Austria and Italy 254.000 trucks were
carried
• In 1993 158.989 trucks
• In 2004, a total of 330.929 trucks (or 5.5 million tons of
freight) were transported through the alps.
• RORO with the greatest car-carrying capacity is the
Ulysess – capacity 1342 cars
Thank you for your
attention!!!
