Problem-solving software is a type of content-free or

content-based programs that places emphasis on critical thinking, analysis, logic and reasoning via the presentation of set of data or problematic event.

Features Stress thinking processes rather than correct answers.

Expose students to a series of activities that would help teach the desired skills. Help students work together in small teams. Give students opportunities to see how information applies to actual problems. Vary the amount of direction and assistance depending on the each students needs.

Content-free skills

Some educators feel that general problemsolving ability can be taught directly by specific instruction and practice in its component strategies and sub-skills (e.g., recalling facts, breaking a problem into a sequence of steps, or predicting outcomes).

Content-area skills

Some problem-solving software focuses on teaching content-area skills, primarily in mathematics and science.

- This program provides students with many problems in Mechanics of Materials to solve. Students get immediate feedback on whether they solve each problem correctly, and they are offered randomly generated versions of similar problems until they can be solved correctly.

MS Excel

- Excel one of the most popular spreadsheet programs that can used to teach management processes and enhance problemsolving and thinking skills in mathematics and science.

Concept-mapping and mind-mapping software

are used to create diagrams of relationships between concepts, ideas or other pieces of information. It has been suggested that the mind mapping technique can improve learning/study efficiency up to 15% over conventional note taking. It is also a popular planning technique with applications across all business sectors and industries. It is used by individuals, corporate teams, students and teachers alike for various purposes.

ChartTool is a great tool

from Google. This is basically a free service that allows users to create awesome charts and graphics. It has a rich gallery of charts of varying formats. Users can choose from Line charts, Bar charts, Pie charts, Map charts, Scatter charts, Venn charts, QR codes, and Google-O-Meter charts. Once you select a chart you can then customize it the way you want.
