Case Study on Dilemma at Devils Den

The case deals with ethics and the individual's personal system. Susan is a student employee at a campus snack bar who is caught between a wish to do what she thinks is right--take steps to stop food being taken off the premises that hasn't been paid for--and fear of negative consequences if she takes such action. Some issues are ethical; others involve criminal behavior. The case also raises questions of a company's ethics and responsibility for creating, or allowing, a climate that tolerates at best, and encourages at worst, illegal, criminal, or unethical behavior.

Do

the right thing or not? Implement ethical thinking? Whether employees should take Freebies or not? Should she initiate individual effort or not?

Weak supervision by the student managers No rules and strict guidelines Lack of training and development. Poor inventory control Uncontrollable situations Student managers influence their employees for freebies Dens as an opportunity.

Slack

management. Lack of motivation. Freebies have become a group norm. Lack of seriousness in employees. Fear of losing friendship.

Raise owner interest (approaching the management) Gaining confidence of the supervisor Try not to overlook the problem Workout with like minds Demonstrate exemplary behavior Stick to moral ground
