Chiaroscuro
Chiaroscuro is an Italian word that means the combination of light and dark
In Art, Chiaroscuro Technique is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark . It is also a term used by artists for using contrasts of light to achieve a sense of volume. The use of dark and light create an effect of threedimensional surfaces.
The Chiaroscuro Technique was born during the Italian Renaissance (16th Century). The most important Renaissance Artists used this technique to create a sense of volume.
Violent chiaroscuro, dark manner used to lend mood or emotional expression. Two of the most important Tenebrist artists are Rembrandt and Caravaggio.
Highlight: maximum illumination zone. Light: clear zone, but darker than the highlight. Shadow: dark zone, but not the most. Core shadow: the darkest part of the shade. Reflected light: light reflects in the back. Cast shadow: shades on the surface, for example the table.
The different tones of grey we can find in a chiaroscuro are called VALUES. If we organize values one by one as a scale, we call it GRAYSCALE.
