Sample Problem

Design a 10-tray distillation column where a mixture of ethanol and water is feed stream. Ethanol is 15 weight% of feed stream. Use 1 atm for pressure. There is a partial reboiler and total condenser (reflux ratio is 1.2). The bottoms composition of ethanol is 0.05. The feed tray is tray 4. Find the distillate weight percent of ethanol.

Homework Problem Due Tuesday, Oct 1st

Please submit one hard copy per team on Tuesday, Oct. 1st in class. Design an ethanol/water distillation column with your own parameters (inlet stream composition, inlet stream mass flow rate, temperature, pressure, number of trays, feed tray, bottom stream composition). Modify the reflux ratio, with all other parameters being constant, and write a brief paragraph on how the distillate composition of ethanol changes when you modify the reflux. Include the parameters you used, the reflux ratio values you tested, and the corresponding distillate concentrations in your analysis. Explain your findings based on your knowledge of distillation columns.
