Level: 4th year high School Focus: Literature

At the end of the discussion learners are expected to: a. unlock the difficult terms found in the poem b. provide the both figurative and literal meaning of the poem. c. Relate the message of the poem to a life like situation d. Construct a song based from the poem

Motivation The teacher posts a picture of a mother and ask the learners the following questions: what can you see in the picture? how can you describe the mother in the picture? what can you say about your mother?

b. Presentation The teacher introduces the lesson c. Lesson proper the teacher asks the students to get sheet of paper and dictionary and answer the following: 1. quarried 2.granite 3.brooch 4.courage 5. grave

the teacher shows the poem and let the learners read it silently.

THE COURAGE THAT MY MOTHER HAD The courage that my mother had Went with her, and is with her still: Rock from New England quarried; Now granite in a granite hill.

The golden brooch my mother wore She left behind for me to wear; I have no thing I treasure more: Yet, it is something I could spare.
Oh, if instead shed left me The thing she took into the grave! That courage like a rock, which she Has no more need of, and I have.

After the first reading the teacher groups the students into ten with five members each. Each group must have a leader and they have to get a strip of paper were they will know if in what category they belong. Either in figurative or literal group. They have to brainstorm their task and after which they will going to perform it to the class. the group must give the figurative and literal meaning of the poem. Depending on what group they belong.

The grouping system are divided into two categories: literal and figurative group The literal group have five groups same as the figurative groups. Teacher provide a priority numbers for their task. They have to study it within 15 minutes then they will discuss it to the class.

Group 1- first stanza of the poem. Group 2- 2nd stanza, first two lines

Group 3- 2nd stanza, last two lines Group 4- 3rd stanza, first two lines Group 5- 3rd stanza, last two lines

Students answer orally the following questions: How does the persona describe her mother in the poem? What legacy does the mother leave her daughter? how does the speaker of the poem feel about the legacy left by her mother? Cite lines to support your answer. Is the Mothers courage important to us? Why?

The teacher asks the learners if they have further questions about the poem. The teacher provides feedback and reinforcement of the topic. The teacher provide additional information about the poem.

In the same group, learners are asks to compose a song that expresses gratitude or appreciation for gifts or legacies received from a mother.

Presentation has a time duration of 2minutes each Its must be lyrically authentic but they can base their tune from the any songs. The theme must be stressed out or emphasized in the song. it must be creative, they can have to use video or audio materials, props or any musical instruments. Each members must participate actively.

Through e-mail, learners are going to send an own constructed poem which is all about the expression of love and admiration to a mother. Deadline would be tomorrow.
