Financial Assistance

 Grant for Business Investment (GBI)-The GBI funding programme is administered by One NorthEast on
behalf of the UK Government and is available to overseas-owned companies opening a new facility,
expanding or modernising an existing plant in the Assisted Areas of Great Britain – of which the North East
is a primary location. The major industrial and commercial areas of North East England are currently
eligible for SFI.

 Assistance is usually given in the form of a grant. The value of the grant is based on a project's capital
expenditure costs and the number & quality of jobs it is expected to create or safeguard. Grant is
negotiated as the minimum necessary to enable the project to go ahead in the form proposed. Eligible
costs include land purchase; site preparation and buildings; plant and machinery. Other costs such as
patent rights, professional fees, installation and reinstallation of machinery may also qualify.

R&D Grant – Individuals and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may obtain grants towards the
costs associated with the research and development of technologically innovative products and processes.
The R&D grant ranges in scale from micro-projects of £20,000 up to £500,000 for larger scale prototype
projects. Individuals, small or medium-sized businesses that are setting up a business are eligible.

R&D Tax Credits – Available to companies which are entitled to a deduction from their taxable income of
130% of qualified expenditure on R&D activities when calculating their profit for tax purposes.

Transport

 Airports - There are two international airports in the North East of England - Newcastle
and Durham Tees Valley. Scheduled flights are offered to Heathrow, Gatwick, and
Stansted taking less than one hour, as well as other UK locations. European destinations
served by scheduled services include Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam (Schiphol), Dusseldorf
and Geneva as well as other international locations such as Dubai
 Road - The North East of England is well served with an excellent network of roads,
forming part of the main road network in the UK, which is one of the most comprehensive
in Europe, and is being continuously upgraded and improved. The region is situated on
the main A1 motorway standard carriageway from London to Edinburgh
 Rail - The North East is also connected to the national rail network with regular trains
down to London every 45 minutes.
 Sea - One of only a few deep water tidal facilities in the UK, Teesport is the UK’s second-
largest port, the UK’s largest chemicals and Europe’s second largest petrochemicals port
accommodating ships up to 50,000dwt. Over the last three years, a £20m investment
programme has brought improvements to road, rail and Ro-Ro facilities and cargo
handled includes liquid, oil, gas and unitised traffic. Together with Teesport, the North
East also has deep water port facilities at the Port of Tyne and Port of Blyth.
Quality of Life

 The beauty of North East England is that it has excellent access to city, coast and countryside.
 The region’s beautiful coast and countryside includes: the Northumberland National Park; two World
Heritage Sites (Durham Cathedral and Castle, and Hadrian’s Wall).
 North East England is home to two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (The North Pennines and
Northumberland Coast); two areas of coastline designated as Heritage Coast; and Western Europe’s
largest reservoir – all within easy reach of the region’s urban centres.
 The region boasts a number of fantastic restaurants from bustling city centre brasseries, lively café-
bars and fashionable family-friendly bistros.
 Gateshead's MetroCentre is Europe's largest shopping centre with over 300 stores
 In the south of the region, mima, the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, displays work by
Hockney, Emin, Frink and Epstein.
