DEURBANISATION
Unfortunately De-urbanisation was a significant development during British rule in India. Many ancient towns and cities were destroyed. The main focus of urban development came to be centered on the three poet towns Bombay Calcutta and Madras. Thee places later became the presidency towns

o Cantonments were built on British plan. o They had broad streets and vast open space. o Residential building and office buildings were kept separate. o Lansdowne is the popular example.

The old city fell into decay as it was neglected. There was no proper system of water supply or drainage. The grand havelis also collapsed and fell into ruin. There were very few traditionally rich families left.

New Delhi
The new city flourished due to Britishs efforts to beautify it. There were broad roads, big bungalows and many gardens It was vsery clean city-the british spent a lot on drainage There was also a proper system of water supply and waste disposal.
