EVALUATION OF EQUIPMENTS FOR SEWING

INTRODUCTION
Sewing machines are the basic of the tools used to convert materials to garment. Evaluation of sewing equipment enables managers to develop better methods , be better troubleshooters, and increase productivity. The type of equipment in a particular plant depend on a firms product line , volume of production and degree of modernisation.

PARAMETERS CONSIDERED FOR EVALUATION

Apparel manufacturing systems employed Method of maintanance Quality of components Skill level of operators

APPAREL MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS EMPLOYED Many parts of garment assembly are sequential; therefore , each operation is dependant on the previous operation. This has significant information in planning and assembly of sewing equipments An inventory buffer is often needed ahead of some operation to guarantee a smooth and consistent work flow.

CONTD
A work station is combination of equipment and work aids that are needed to perform a designated operation For example: In a progressive bundle system frequent evaluation of sewing equipments is required where as this is vise versa in a group system

METHOD OF MAINTANANCE
The method of maintanance plays a vital role in sewing machine evaluation. The maintanace management must explore sewing machines essential worn out properties, degree of productivity, labours ease to operate.

CONTD...
CHECK LIST OF MAINTANANCE: QUALITY PARAMETERS: 1. Feed pucker evaluation 2. Tension pucker evaluation 3. Jamming evaluation 4. Moisture pucker evaluation

CONTD...

1.
2. 3. 1.

2.

COST PARAMETERS: Reduced sewing cutting cost Reduced depreciation cost Less hindering of Profit potential LABOUR PARAMETERS: Thorough knowledge of equipments Good technical knowledge of work aids

QUALITY OF COMPONENTS:

In general, a sewing equipment are of various forms comprising of n number of parts with supporting work aids that are to be evaluated to maintain a good depreciation graph of sewing equipment

The components which hinder the evaluation parameters are: 1. Type of bed 2. Lubrication systems 3. Stitch forming mechanism 4. Material feeding system 5. Speed control

TYPE OF BED

The bed is the lower surface of the machine under which the feed mechanisms and loopers are located The bed type may affect how garment parts are presented to the needle and the rate of production Defferent kinds of beds are suited for different kinds of operations For example: The flat bed machines allow manipulation of fabric on both sides of the needle for top stitching and lapped seaming

LUBRICATION SYSTEMS
Lubircation systems are prime factors in maintanance, down time, efficient operation etc., The mechanical parts of sewing machines must be lubricated (oiled) to reduce friction and keep mechanical parts moving freely

STITCH FORMING MECHANISM

These are mechanical parts that, when correctly syncronised, form stitches and sew seams Many are specific to the stitch or machine type The stitch forming parts are thread control devises, needles, bobbin mechanism, loopers, spreaders, throat plates etc., Correct stitch formation is dependent on the appropriate combination of these parts and their precise syncronisation Good maintanance is essential for the needed precision

MATERIAL FEEDING SYSTEM

Materials handling components of a machine are often reffered to as feeding systems For a precise line of stitches to be formed, fabric must be moved through the stitch forming area of the machine to the accuracy and precision These parts must be compatible, if one is changed the other parts are also to be changed to make the system work effectively

SPEED CONTROL
The speed at which a machine can operate depends on the engineering of the machines components Operators must be able to maintain quality standards while utilising the higher speeds The critical factor is to have the capacity for speed that is best suited to the product line, operator skill level and the method of production

SKILL LEVEL OF OPERATORS

Direct labour those employed working directly on the product being produced such as sewing and finishing operator add value to the products and convert materials into finished products. Hiring the right person for the job of sewing evaluates the level of productivity. The operators employed allows a firm to establish goals and priorities.

CONTD.

The job skills to be inherited by the operators for the evaluation of sewing equipments are: 1. Knowledge about technology 2. Knowledge about the operation of the equipment 3. Understanding of assembling process 4. Cross operating skills 5. Identification of equipments malfunctioning

CONCLUSION

Thus evaluation of sewing equipment is essential for utilising the potential resources of the firm to manage high productivity in a cost effective manner.
