MODULE 3

GSM BURST

Chapter 03
Session Objective
Topics to be covered in this session : Burst Element GSM interfaces

Burst Element
Information : Area for speech, data or control information is held. Guard Period : Margin period to enable the burst to hit the TS. Stealing Flags :To indicate the traffic channel that half of the
block has been stolen by the control channel SACCH.

Training Sequence : A 26 bit sequence used

by the equalizer to estimate the transfer characteristics of the physical path between the BTS and MS.

Tail Bits :To indicate beginning and end of burst.

RF

Um Interface
The air interface between the MS (Mobile Station) and the BTS. This interface uses LAPDm protocol for signaling, to conduct call control, measurement reporting, Handover, Power control, Authentication, Authorization, Location Update and so on. Traffic and Signaling are sent in bursts of 0.577 ms at intervals of 4.615 ms, to form data blocks each 20 ms.

The Um Interface is divided into 3 layers.

Network Layer CM,MM,RRM

Data Link Layer LAPD

Physical Layer RF

Um Network Layer
The Network Layer helps in the signaling to the user. Basic function of this layer is to establish, maintain and terminate the circuit switched connections. It also supports the services to the SMS and supplementary services.

Radio Resource Management

The role of the RR management layer is to establish and release stable connection between mobile stations (MS) and an MSC for the duration of a call, and to maintain it despite user movements. The following functions are performed by the MSC: Cell selection, Handover, Allocation and take-down of point-to-point channels, Monitoring and forwarding of radio connections, Introduction of encryption, Change in transmission mode.

Mobility Management
It handles the control functions required for mobility, e.g.: Authentication, Assignment of TMSI, Management of subscriber location.

Connection Management
It contains the following functions: Call Control (CC) Provides Function and procedures for ISDN. Call reestablishment. Call cleaning procedures. Short Message Service (SMS) Short message control (SMC) Short message control protocol (SMCP) Supplementary service support Handles services not related to specific call like call forwarding, call waiting etc.

Um Data Link Layer

The LAP-D protocol is used (similar to ISDN LAP-D). LAP-D has the following functions: Connectionless transfer on point-to-point and point-tomultipoint signaling channels, Setup and take-down of layer 2 connections on pointto-point signaling channels, Connection-oriented transfer with retention of the transmission sequence, error detection and error correction.
