CHAPTER 5

Types of Computer systems

Computer Systems
Batch-processing system Control System Automated system Interactive system Network system

Batch-processing system
Processes a large amount of data as one job No operator intervention Produces output that is not time dependent

Control System
Involves sensors and feedback loops Responds within specific time to bring changes in conditions Used in oil refineries, chemical plants, and integrated traffic control

Automated system
Includes sensors, actuators and a user interface with limited scope for interaction. Used in washing machines, electric oven, etc

Interactive system
Allows user(s) to interact directly with the running programs to influence the course of processing E.g. PC

Network system
Uses network operating systems to allow 2 or more computers to share controlled access to facilities such as file storage, servers and peripheral devices (e.g. printers). Types of network LAN local area network consists no. of
networked devices connected on a single site (e.g. office) WAN wide area network for communications over great distances

Network system (contd)

Network Topologies BUS NETWORK
less cabling Connectors are expensive required If central cable stops working, whole network less expensive goes down network If new stations are added, the performance

decreases

Network system (contd)

RING NETWORK Faulty connection between two works well during heavy stations can cause network failure traffic possible to Difficult to add a new device create large networks

Network system (contd)

STAR NETWORK If central hub Easy to expand/extend breaks/malfunctions, the entire network fails. if any station fails, the other devices are not affected easy to identify faults
