world and the fourth largest economy.

By 2040, China will have the largest


economy in the world.

For every one person who can speak


English, there are at least three who can
speak Mandarin.

The Beijing Olympics will be the first
major international sporting event to
be held in China.

It will showcase Chinese culture to


the rest of the world.
Fuwa are the Official Mascots of Beijing
2008 Olympic Games, carrying a
message of friendship and peace to
children all over the world.

Each one has a rhyming two-syllable


name. When you put their names
together - Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni - they
say "Welcome to Beijing“.

Tonal Difference
Chinese is a tonal language. The tone of the word
alters its meaning and it is crucial to get the tone
right if you want to avoid confusion. Mandarin has
four tones – high, rising, falling-rising and falling.
