The UNWTO (United Nation World Tourism Organization) is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and accessible tourism. UNWTO promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth and offers leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide. UNWTO generates market knowledge, promotes competitive and sustainable tourism policies and instruments. UNWTOs membership includes 155 countries, 6 Associate Members and over 400 Affiliate Members.

A record-breaking year for travel in 2012

13 December, 2012 was chosen as the symbolic arrival day of the one-billionth tourist which was celebrated by UNWTO Secretary-General in Spain, home to UNWTO headquarters.

Every single person who has traveled in 2012, whether on holiday or business, is part of the one billion and can make a real difference. I hope everyone will join our campaign and help us spread the message that one billion tourists really do mean one billion opportunities for economic growth, job creation and the future of our planet.

About The Campaign


Small changes in travel behavior can contribute to positive change throughout the world. With one billion tourists traveling the world in a single year in 2012, transforming these one billion tourists into one billion opportunities is at the heart of this campaign launched by UNWTO.

Strategies by UNWTO
Tourism businesses and destinations have numerous opportunities to positively contribute to local economies, i.e. by: buy food and souvenirs locally creating local jobs promote environmental sustainability supporting local conservation initiatives supporting local sustainable economic development

Global Code of Ethics for Tourism


A frame of reference for sustainable and responsible tourism. Helpful for tourism businesses, governments, local communities and destinations in encouraging tourists to make a difference. The publications on "The Responsible Tourist" by the UNWTO offer guidance and tips on how travelers can play an active role in supporting and promoting sustainable and responsible travel.

Focus on Rural Tourism


The development activities of rural tourism help in improving the rural populations living and livelihood conditions as planned for the 12th Five year plan.

It is one of the few activities which can provide a solution to falling income levels & lesser job opportunities in the total areas leading to an urbanization syndrome in the rural areas.

Strategic Action Plan - Ministry of Tourism, GOI


Ministry of Tourism focuses on holistic development of Tourism in the country with an objective of promoting employment and inclusive growth. The development of Indias tourism such as roads, airports and medium priced hotels could generate 20 million additional employment opportunities in tourist related businesses within a decade. Vision : To achieve a superior quality of life for People of India through development and promotion of tourism, which would provide a unique opportunity for physical invigoration, mental rejuvenation, cultural enrichment and spiritual elevation.

Figures at a glance
Tourism has the potential to not only be the economy driver, but also become an effective tool for poverty alleviation and ensuring growth with equity Tourism contribution to Indian GDP is 5.92%, and employment is 7.9% providing 39,3 million jobs. The number of foreign tourist arrivals in India has grown to 6.29 million in 2011, an annual rate of growth of 8.9%.

Indias Target for 2016


The Ministry of Tourism has set a target to increase Indias share in International Tourist Arrival from 0.6% to 1% by the year 2016, which means a growth rate of about 12% in terms of Foreign Tourist Arrivals.
