Broad Band VSAT Network

Presentation

1
Satellite Communication
• Satellite is a microwave device consisting
of receiver, repeater and regenerator in orbit
• Satellite transmission involves sending
signals to satellite that receive, amplify, and
transmit back to earth

2
Satellite Coverage

3
Capabilities of Satellite
Transmission
• Point-to-point transmission
– To transfer large volume of data
– Voice, data, etc communication
– Video conference
• Point-to-multipoint transmission
– Data communication
– Internet
– Video conference
• Broadcast services such as television
4
Satellite Communication is Best
Suited
• For signals originating from a single site
with simultaneous distribution to many
remote sites
• For remote sites which are located in
geographically dispersed areas
• For delivery of large volumes of data to
remote sites with relatively small volume
return channel

5
Multimedia Applications

Applications such as text, image, video and

real time signals served on a common
transmission media are known as
Multimedia Applications.

6
Multimedia Applications
(Cont’d)
• Significant Amount of
Bandwidth is required.
• Broadband Infrastructure is
required.

7
ETC’s Readiness
• ETC is now building such infrastructure in
the capital city and major towns using
optical fiber and ATM switches.
• In order to provide these services for users
at remote and rural sites a Broadband
VSAT network is also under
implementation.

8
What Is Broadband VSAT
Network?
• It is a VSAT network designed to receive
and transmit wideband signals
– TX up to 512 kbps from a remote station
– RX up to 45 Mbps and any number of TV
channels
• A VSAT network that supports multimedia
application.

9
What Is Broadband VSAT
Network? (Cont’d)
A Broadband VSAT Network is a
flexible DVB-IP platform allowing
multimedia services such as digital
video, WAN, Internet, video-
conferencing and rural telephony on a
single infrastructure.

10
Benefits of Broadband VSAT
Network
• Same resource can be shared by a group of
users.
• Efficient Utilization of Resources.
• Multiple remote sites can get access to
information concentrated in capital cities.
• High network availability
• Fast deployment
11
ETC’s BB MM NW Structure
The Network consists of
– MM network in Addis Ababa connecting users’
data center to ETC’s Network
– International & Local Internet Teleports
– Satellite Hub station and remote VSAT stations
