Happy Prince

Prepared by : Elly Wong Lee Yien Jong Shiaw Hui

There is a statue of the happy prince which admired by lots of people standing in the city. A swallow wanted to spend a night at his golden feet before he travelling to the Egypt but discovered that the statue was weeping. The happy prince was pity of poor and called the swallow to help them to deliver all of his jewels to the poor even he would blind. The swallow agreed and helped him. The swallow died frost and the statues heart cracked into two. He was no longer beautiful and been pulled down by the people. His heart could not be melted. The swallow and the happy prince were picked by the angel as the two most precious things for the God in the Heaven.

Setting
Place Setting North-European city on Winter City stood the statue of the Happy Prince Palace of Sans-Souci the place Happy Prince lived for Time Setting Night - the Swallow act as a messenger helping Happy Prince solve the impoverished/poverty of the needy people in the city Day the Swallow told the happy prince about its adventure and story Winter the Swallow died frost due to too cold.

Major Characters
The Happy Prince -Made up of golden statue that can see whats going on around him, but it cannot move. -He was lived happily and there is no sadness when he was alive -But he was weeping for the hardship that faces the people of his citizens. -The Swallow had been requested by the Happy Prince to take pieces of him (the gold leaf of the statue, the sapphires that are his eyes, and the ruby that is in the hilt of his sword) and give them to the poor citizens of the city. -In the end, he was cracked down as the statue is not beautiful without its decorations.

The Swallow
A bird who stayed behind when the rest of his flock migrated to Egypt in order to court a Reed (river plant) that he had fallen in love with. However, he sleep one night under the statue of the Happy Prince before he leaves. The statue start crying because he was saddened by everything going on in the city. The Swallow is the agent of the Princes generosity, bringing the gems and gold to the poor as instructed, and the two become best friend. Eventually, the Swallow dies because he was chosen to remain with the blinded Prince rather than abandon him to fly to Egypt, and the winter gets too cold. He dies at the statues feet.

Minor Character
~ The Reed -Lover of the Swallow

~ The Two Town Councillors They are greedy and obsessed with their public image. They want the metal of the statue melted-down to be made into statues of them

~ The Poor Woman (seemstress) -Her son was ill, and she was strugglling as a seamstress to make enough money to take care of him. -She had received the ruby from the hilt of the Princes sword with the help of the Swallow. Seemstress son -He has a fever and was asking for oranges. His mother had nothing to give him but river water, so he was crying.

~ The Young Playwright -He was a starving artist struggling to complete a play, but he cannot concentrate because he was too hungry. -He had received the first sapphire from the eyes of the Happy Prince

~ The Little Match-Girl - She drops the matches that she was supposed to sell, and now she was crying for she would be beaten by her father when she returns home without the money. - She had received the second sapphire from the eyes of the Happy Prince

~ The Mayor - He orders that the statue be torn down. - He wanted the metal to be made into a statue of himself.

Theme
Love -The Happy Prince was loving and caring so much to his citizens. The Swallow was requested by him to take pieces of gold on his body. Besides, the ruby on Happy Princes sword-hilt and sapphire on Happy Princes eyes were also given to people by the help of the swallow -The swallow willing to stay together with Happy Prince as Happy Prince was blind until the last second of his life

sacrifice
a)Swallow was decided not to go to egypt and willing to stay with the prince even in winter season. He is willing to fly over big city to see the suffering and misery of man and of women. b) The happy prince was sacrificed his eye and his fine gold skin to his poor people

The Swallow and the Happy Prince sacrificed his own life to help others at the same time

caring
2) CARING: The Swallow choose to stay with the prince to look after the prince because the Happy Prince were blind even though the winter has come and know that he will be freezing to death.

Rich and Poor (X)


-The Queen who does not hard of her seamstress and conclude that they were lazy in doing their work. The Seamstress unable to give her sons his favourite as she is no enough money to buy, so she gave him river water

-The Young Playwright cannot concentrate to complete on play because he was too hungry and desired for food

Moral values
Sacrifice is a major moral lesson of the story. The prince, in his selfless service to the people and care for the same does not mind sacrificing all the materials that his body is made up of. Sacrifice comes out of love and care for others and it manifests in the service for people through the realization of absolute solitude and unity among humans. The Happy Prince who is merely a statue understands this. Not all humans do.

Plot
EXPOSITION -The Swallow having a night on the Happy Princes golden feet before he travelling to the Egypt. But he noticed that the happy prince was weeping. The swallow asked for the reason.
RISING ACTION The Happy Prince asked the Swallow to deliver all of his jewels to the poor in the city even he would blind.

CLIMAX The Swallow died frost due to the weather getting colder and the Happy Princes heart cracked into two. FALLING ACTION The people pulled down the statue of the Happy Prince because he was no longer beautiful. His heart could not be melted.

RESOLUTION Both of the Swallow and the Happy Prince were dead. Angel brought back the leaden heart of the Happy Prince and the dead Swallow to the God.

Literary devices

Personification b) and when the morning star shines he utters one cry of joy, and then he is silent. c) and had been so attracted by her slender waist that he had stopped to talk to her.

Hyperbola a) and I am afraid that she is coquette, for she is flirting with the wind. b) The Reed made the most graceful curtseys c) The Reed shook her head d) and the Reed made him a low bow e) This was his (the Swallow) courtship, and it lasted all through the summer.

Point of view
The Happy Prince is a story about humankind. More than charity, the tale shows the irony of an apparently- dead statue and a bird who are more generous than people.

Writers mood
imagination and creative -The Swallow in love with the Reed and courtship to the Reed. -The Swallows plans for going to Egypt. mood of entertain people - hope to entertain children when read this story.

Writers opinion
The writer express the poverty of the people who worked very hard for survival He also presenting ironic scenarios as the people show themselves for fame and fortune (councillors)
