NETWORKING

Submitted By: Siddharth Gaur Bachelor in Compute Application Final Year Dezyne ECole College

Introduction to Networking

What is a Network?

A network consists of 2 or more computers connected together, and they can communicate and share resources (e.g. information)

Why Networking?

Sharing information i.e. data communication

Sharing hardware or software

E.g. print document

Centralize administration and support

E.g. Internet-based, so everyone can access the same administrative or support application from their PCs

How many kinds of Networks? LAN and WAN

Depending on ones perspective, we can classify networks in different ways

LAN (Local Area Network)

Local Area Network (LAN)
Small network, short distance
A room, a floor, a building Limited by no. of computers and distance covered Usually one kind of technology throughout the LAN Serve a department within an organization

Examples: Network inside the Student Computer Room Network inside your home

Wide Area Network (WAN)

A network that uses long-range telecommunication links to connect 2 or more LANs/computers housed in different places far apart. Towns, states, countries Examples: Network of our Campus Internet Your home

WAN
Student Computer Centre USA

Topology 3 basic(connectivity) types Based on topology

How so many computers are connected together?

Bus Topology

Ring Topology

Star Topology
Hub

Transmission Media
Two main categories:

Based on transmission media: Wired (UTP, coaxial cables, fiber-optic cables) and Wireless

Guided wires, cables Unguided wireless transmission, e.g. radio, infrared

We will concentrate on guided media here:

Twisted-Pair cables: Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP) cables Shielded Twisted-Pair (STP) cables Coaxial cables Fiber-optic cables

NETWORKING CABLES

Cables
What is cables?

How Many Types of cables?

Common Network Cable Types

Fiber optic Coaxial cable

Unshielded twisted pair

UTP categories
Category 1
Category 2 Category 3 Category 4 Category 5 Category 5e Category 6

Voice only (Telephone)

Data to 4 Mbps (Local talk) Data to 10Mbps (Ethernet) Data to 20Mbps (Token ring) Data to 100Mbps (Fast Ethernet) Data to 1000Mbps (Gigabit Ethernet) Data to 2500Mbps (Gigabit Ethernet)

Cat5 Cable
1000Mbps data capacity For runs of up to 90 meters Terminated with RJ-45 connectors

RJ45 connector

Making connections - Tools

Cat5e cable

RJ45 connectors
Cable stripper Crimping tool

Step 1 Strip cable end

Strip 1 1 of insulating sheath Avoid cutting into conductor insulation

Step 2 Untwist wire ends

Sort wires by insulation colors

Step 3 Arrange wires

TIA/EIA 568A: GW-G OW-Bl BlW-O BrW-Br TIA/EIA 568B: OW-O GW-Bl BlW-G BrW-Br

Step 4 Trim wires to size

Trim all wires evenly Leave about of wires exposed

Step 5 Attach connector

Maintain wire order, leftto-right, with RJ45 tab facing downward

Step 6 - Check
Do all wires extend to end? Is sheath well inside connector?

Step 7 - Crimp
Squeeze firmly to crimp connecter onto cable end (8P)

Step 8 Test
Does the cable work?

How To Share Data ?

Remote Desktop Access

Why we use Remote Desktop Access?

For Share desktop For share Resources

On your Work PC
Click on Start and then right click and go to properties on the My Computer icon

On your Work PC
Select the Remote tab Check the Remote Desktop connection box.

From your Home PC

Select Remote Desktop Connection.

From your Home PC

Type in the IP address of your PC and click Connect

From your Home PC

Type password and Click OK

Share other Computer Desktop
