DANUBE SCHOOL OF GERMAN PAINTING

It is the tradition of German landscape painting and etching that developed in the Danube River valley in the early 16th century. The Danube School or Donau School is the name of a circle of painters of the first third of the 16th century in Bavaria and Austria . Danube school, German Donauschule , a tradition of landscape painting that developed in the region of the Danube River valley in the period c.1500 to c.1530. The region was located between the major commercial and artistic centers of Nuremberg and Augsburg to the west and Vienna, an imperial capital, to the east.

Number of famous painters were the members of danube school , chief among them are Albrecht Altdorfer Wolf Huber Jrg Breu the Elder Rueland Frueauf the Younger Augustin Hirschvogel Lucas Cranach the Elder

ALBRECHT ALTDORFER

Albrecht Altdorfer was a Renaissance-era German painter, engraver and architect. A member of the Danube School, Altdorfers oeuvre consists mainly of breathtaking landscapes, historical scenes and biblical subjects. He also created sketches and was a master engraver and a portrait painter as well.

LUCAS CRANACH THE ELDER

Lucas Cranach was a famous German painter of the Renaissance.Born around 1472 in Kronach. Died on October 16, 1553 in Weimar. Lucas Cranach combined in his work landscape depictions with scenic events towards a romanticlooking unity. In doing so, he became the ancestor of the Danube school.

WOLF HUBER

Huber was a German painter, draughtsman and woodcut artist, who, after Altdorfer, was the most important member of the Danube school. He worked in Regensburg and Passau. Few paintings by him are known and it is in woodcuts and drawings that his lyrical approach to landscape can best be seen.

JORG BREU THE ELDER

Jrg Breu the Elder (c. 14751537), of Augsburg, was a painter of the German Danube school. He journeyed to Austria and created several multi-panel altarpieces such as the Melk Altar (1502). He returned to Augsburg in 1502 where he became a master. He died in 1537.

AUGUSTIN HIRSCHVOGEL

Augustin Hirschvogel (1503 February 1553) was a German artist, mathematician, and cartographer known primarily for his etchings. His 35 small landscape etchings, made between 1545 and 1549, assured him a place in the Danube School. Along with Lucas Cranach the Elder and Wolf Huber he is regarded to be the main representative of the so called Danube School .
