Geometry Unit Grade: 4

Cindi Solomon EDEL 433

Lesson One
Objective:
SWBAT

identify line segments, lines, and parallel lines

Facilitate Learning
Warm-up Introduce geometric topic: lines, and planes are the foundation for understanding two- and three-dimensional geometry. Terminology relates to the world around us Relationships between objects, movement and even people Images of: door frames that contain line segments, streets that run parallel to one another, and a farm with parallel rows of newly planted corn

Direct Instruction
Modeling: White board- draw examples of a line segment, line, and parallel lines Explain that each figure has a vocabulary word that describes it Display the vocabulary words using the projector Define each term and write the vocabulary word next to the examples drawn on the white board

Line Line

Segment Lines

Parallel

Guided Practice

Team member 3 will come up to the work table to collect (4) white boards and (4) dry erase markers
Students will go back to their table and distribute the boards and markers Think-pair-and share one new idea they've just learned Partner A stands up and shares Students follow along as teacher guides them in practicing, drawing, and labeling vocabulary terms

Independent Practice

Each student will receive a worksheet entitled Match-Up The worksheet asks students to draw examples of each of the following: line, parallel line, and line segment next to the corresponding vocabulary term Next to the term, students must write the vocabulary word definition

Hands on Experiences

Match Up worksheet activity asks the students to use colored pencils to draw an example of the figures as they would be found in the real world After independent practice, students will use talking chips to discuss with their table the definitions, relationships to the real world, and their drawings of lines, line segments, and parallel lines

Assessment

Team member 2 stands up and describes one relationship between what theyve learned and the world around us Informal assessment of student understanding during guided practice, independent work on Match Up worksheet, and ideas shared during whole group discussion

Closure

Remind students of how the figures and terminology relate to the world around us Describe relationships between objects, movement and even people Review the terms and drawings of the following figures: line segment, line, and parallel lines
