INTRODUCTION & SBC WORKING SBC FEATURES SBC FUNCTIONS TWIN SBC COMMUNICATION ADVANTAGES OVER CONVENTIONAL BRAKING SYSTEM APPLICATIONS CONCLUSION

Sensotronic Brake Control

Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) works electronically.
When driver presses the brake pedal, the brake
command is processed by micro computer.

It continuously receives sensor signals from each

individual wheel , pedal value sensor and the steering system.

From these data optimal brake pressure is calculated for

each wheel individually

SBC Features:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Brake pedal Control unit Emergency braking Driving stability Braking in curve

SBC functions:

Dry Braking Function Traffic Jam Assist (SBC Stop) Drive-Away Assist (SBC Hold) Electronic Parking brake

SBC Control Units (A714n1 N4813 & A713n1 N4811)

Units are located on the

right and left side of the vehicle Bolted to the hydraulic unit Communicates with the ESP control unit (N4715) or (N4812) via a dedicated data bus (CAN SBC) Evaluates system sensor signals to control brake operation Each unit is responsible for controlling 4 brake circuits

SBC Hydraulic Units (A714 & A713)

Units are located

on the right and left side of the vehicle Each unit has its own fluid reservoir Only use DOT 4+ brake fluid

Brake Operating Unit (BOU)

Located near the fire

wall on the drivers side of the vehicle Incorporates the following: - Fluid reservoir - Two pedal value sensors - Tandem master cylinder - brake pressure simulator

Pedal Value Sensors (B37/1 & B3712)

Located on the brake

operating unit

Signals sent to SBC

control modules to determine the amount of braking requested

- If one sensor

malfunctions, the value for the other will be used

Wheel Speed Sensors (L6/1, 2,3,4)

Located at each

wheel Transmit data to SBC control units for vehicle speed Left SBC control unit receives inputs from L611 & L614 Right SBC control unit receives inputs from L612 & L613

Brake Light Switch (59/1)

Mounted on the

brake pedal Transmits a signal to systems that need to be informed of brake actuation

Front Axle Brake Calipers

Two calipers on each wheel Fore and aft calipers are

controlled by different control Units Insures brake force application at the front axle if there is a failure with one system Square blocks on front calipers are used for vibration dampening

Rear Axle Brake Calipers

One caliper on each wheel Calipers are split (top I

bottom) The top portion of each caliper is controlled by one SBC System The bottom portion of each caliper is controlled by the other SBC system Insures brake force application at the rear axle if there is a failure with one system

If both SBC systems fail electrohydraulic braking is not available Hydraulic brake force will be applied to all four front axle brake calipers The instrument cluster will inform the customer to stop the vehicle

Two SBC System Failures

Advantages of SBC over Conventional Brake Control:

Reduces stopping distances. Optimum deceleration during cornering.

Improved handling and overall driving safe.

Better brake response. Optimized pedal feel.

More stable braking.

APPLICATIONS:

It can be used to automatically guide the cars of the

future along the roads with the aid of video cameras, proximity radar and advanced telemetric. Which automatically acts on the instruction of an electronic autopilot & stops the car safely.

SBC can be combined with adaptive cruise control to

provide automatic braking if a vehicle ahead suddenly stops and the driver fails to react quickly enough.

It can also be combined with some type of crash

avoidance system that is capable of detecting objects in the road ahead, or an oncoming vehicle, and apply the brakes before the driver can react.

Conclusion:

The main reason which made to take up this topic is safety of public, as it reduces number of accidents. By adding Sensotronic Brake Control to vehicles it improves the safety and comfort in vehicles. A vehicle with SBC combined with cruise control automatically applies brake if a vehicle ahead stops suddenly. Thus reduces accidents.
