TRANSMISSION

- Abhishek Srivastava - Amber Srivastava - Dhebar Yashesh - Kumar Saurav

Purpose: Transfer rotation from engine to wheels

PARTS of Tranmission System: 1) Engine 2) Gearbox 3) Clutch 4) Differential

Engine Specifications:

Honda 600 CBR (proposed) It comes with an inbuilt gear box and clutch. The engine gearbox consists of 6 gears (no reverse gear is there by default).

Drive Train:

Two types 1)Chain Drive 2)Shaft Drive

Reason- The car is a rear wheel drive and the engine is also positioned at the back of the chasis. CHAIN 520 and 428 can be used

Our transmission
In our car the output shaft from the gearbox is parallel to the axle of the wheels. So we will be doing parallel transmission which will use the sprocket chaindrive mechanism. The final drive(gear-ratio of sprockets attached to output shaft of gearbox and ring-gear of differential) ratio will be around 4.

CHAIN 520 OR 428??

520 chain is mainly used by teams but 428 can also be used Disadvantages of 428 chain: 1) Is not as durable as 520. 2) If we use 520 then well get a higher range of gear ratio because of the sprocket that we can use in case of 520. Chain Type Pitch Distance b/w inner plates 520 5/8 428 5/16 428 is lighter as compared to 520 and can work efficiently for

Close-ratio and Wide-ratio

A close-ratio transmission is a transmission in which there is little difference between the gear ratios of the gears. a transmission with large differences between gears is termed "wide-ratio. These terms are relative. A close-ratio is used for racing vehicles ( our case).

DIFFERENTIALS
Used to give different angular velocity to the right and left wheel while turning. Types: 1)Open differentials 2)Limited-slip differentials (LSD) 4)Quaife Differential 3)Torsen differentials

Open Differential The Basic One

Limited Slip Differential:

Torsen Differential:

Differential of Our interest

We will be using Torsen differential. Reason: Over normal open diff- in the situation when the traction on both the wheels is different the slipping will result in the wheel with low traction in case of open differential while the torsen is specially made to sort out this perticular situation.

2) over LSD: in case of sharp or long turns (when the difference in velocity of wheels is large or remains for a long time resp.) differential will get locked resulting in stopping the car.

CLUTCH:
Use: 1) To bring a car to a stand-still 2) to help in changing gears Composition of clutch: Flywheel, Pressure Plates, Clutch Plates, Clutch Cover,Diaphragm Springs Flywheel-Connected to the engine shaft. Clutch Plates-Connected to the layshaft of the gear box

Our system
Semiautomatic Transmission (clutchless manual gearshift) \ Kit to be used : we might be using PROSHIFT PSU with Titanium Paddle Shifters.

FINAL level of TRANSMISSION

Transmission so far
We will implementing parallel transmission from engine driveshaft to the wheels axel. The differential to be used is that of TORSEN.(considering the traction effect). The two axels emerging out of the differential will be connected to wheels.

Between differential axel and Wheel

The gears inside differential operates when there is proper balance of forces in them from either side. One part of the differential axel is connected to the wheels(indirectly) while the other is inserted in the gear chamber of differential. If this axel is moved in the fashion other than its regular rotation, it will lead to imbalance in forces of gears in gear chamber of diff which will stop the motion of gears.. So the constraint is that this axel performs only the specified rotational motion.

Between differential axel and Wheel

There are the 2 possibilities in which the movement of axle can cause problem 1)transversal(longitudenal movement) 2)rotational movement along some other axis. 2nd problem will be solved with the help of U joints.

The U joint (Universal Joint)

Made for the purpose of transforming rotational motion of one axle(in our case the differential one) to the second one(connected to wheel) without concerning their mutual angular inclination.

The clip.

1st problem
In total there will be 3 axel from differential to wheel. The centre one will be connected to the axel going to the wheel via U-joint. This will solve our problem concerning rotation about other axis. Now remains the problem of longitudinal displacement of diff. axle.

The problem is solved using plunge joint. Two rods connected using plunge joint have the rotational constraint irrespective of the distance between them. The better explanation is through this clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8iZpjPG 4xM Cv joint-axel assembly
