Textual Analyses of Magazine

Advertisements
Joe Oliver-3322
Kings of Leon
The advert is in the inside of the cover for Mojo
Magazine and is A4 sized.
The background is black and the advert is placed
in a border in order to give the ad a neater finish.
The bands name are at the top of the page in a
central position in white capital letters to contrast
with the black background. The font is of medium
size in context to the size of the advert.
Kings of Leon
The album title is Mechanical Bull and is large neon lights, two yellow, one blue
and one red; this is the primary image of the advert. This is a reference to the
mechanical bulls that are present in bars in the USA and the type of signs these
establishments have. This tells the audience where the band is from if they were
unsure previously, but also hints at the style of music the album consists of. As the
lights are the main subject of the advert, it is the largest item on the ad. The
largest lights are the title of the album and an arrow pointing to it, which
immediately draws the attention of the audience to the ad.
Below the neon signs is The New Album and its release date in direct address,
which makes the audience feel involved in the ad as well build expectation
amongst the audience. This is in the same style as the name of the band at the top
of the ad; it too being in a central position.
The website is in the same style font but smaller and in a central position as this is
not seen as particularly important in marketing the album.
Record label logos are in the bottom corners of the advert so the audience is
aware of the labels the band is signed to. They are quite small as they [the logos]
too arent that important in promoting and marketing the album.
Kings of Leon
The Strypes
This advert is in Mojo Magazine and A4 sized
The advert consists of a black and white picture of the band at a
slight low angle midshot, in formal clothing which gives the
impression they are very serious about their music and are
highbrow culture. This is ironic as the picture of the band itself is a
snapshot.
However their hairstyles are quite messy and one of them is
wearing sunglasses in addition to the fact their body language is
quite relaxed and laid back. This juxtaposes the formality of their
attire and shows theyre quite edgy and rebellious-conventional of
the rock genre.
This mysterious image creates an enigma for the audience and
therefore appeals to them as they want to know what the album
consists of.

The Strypes
The name of the band is above the primary image, which is a midshot of the band
members, in the centre of the page. The font is large and bold in order to attract
the reader. It is black and placed on a white background to emphasise this. The
picture is in greater proportion than that of the text as it allows the audience to
link the name of the band to those in the picture.
The name of the album however is red and this makes it particularly eye catching.
The name of the album Snapshot, is underneath the picture and allows the reader
to make the connection from the name of the band to the picture to the album
name. The title suggests that this is just a short look at what the band is capable
of.
The font refers back to black and is slightly smaller than the writing above it. It tells
the audience when the album will be released which builds expectation. It also
informs the reader that this is the debut album of the band so it will be something
new in the industry.
The bands website is placed bottom left on a small font as this is seen to be the
least important bit of information in the advert. This will tell consumers where to
obtain more information if required. This is direct address towards the audience

The Strypes
Manic Street Preachers
This advert is in Mojo Magazine and is at the back of the magazine.
The advert is very simplistic; the name of the band is in a central
position at the top in large font on a light blue background to make
it stand out to the audience. The name of the album is the largest
font in the advert in a central position in the middle of the page, as
that is deemed the most important information for consumers. The
album name Rewind The Film suggests that the band is going back
to their original style of music, like rewinding a film.
The difference between MSP and The Strypes is that MSP have
been around since the 80s and therefore would have a loyal
fanbase to buy their album. This means that this simple,
minimalistic style is effective as they only place the necessary
information to entice their audience. This minimalistic style is
emphasised by the lack of an image of the band and just a
secondary image in the background.
MSP
Near the bottom of the page, it includes the names of artists
featuring on the album as well as the best known single from it.
This is in a white font compared with the black seen throughout in
order to make it stand out in a different way.
It also shows the different ways the album can be purchased and
the bands website; the latter in white for the same reason as
above.
There is the record labels logo in the bottom left and information
about buying the album from Amazon. This would be Amazon
putting their name to a well known brand like MSP and this helps
boost album sales, benefitting both the band and Amazon, whose
logo is in the bottom right of the advert.
This information is directly addressing the audience in order to
persuade them to purchase the album.
