This document discusses hot tapping, which is the process of safely adding new connections to pressurized piping systems while they remain in operation. It describes some common uses of hot tapping such as installing pressure control switches, flow meters, and inspection points. The process involves using a tapping machine through a gate valve to drill into the pipe. Some advantages are that it avoids shutting down the system, bypass lines, and massive draining, while it requires high safety precautions and skilled technicians.

The ability to safely tie-in to a
pressurized system, while under full operating conditions. Adding new connections to piping is not the only use for hot tapping. Some of the many uses include: Product sampling point Pressure control switch installation Flow meter installation Inspection of pipe line Thermo well sensor installation Determine product in the pipeline Draining of pipeline Air relief point Gate Valve
Drilling or Tapping Assembly
Tee or Butt welded pipe
The hole saw is advanced through the valve,to the pipe. The machine is engaged and the cut begins. When the cut is finished, the machine is disengaged and retracted beyond the gate of the valve. The valve is closed and the machine is removed. Angle Taps, Elbow Tap and taps perpendicular are also possible in this method. ADVANTAGES No need to shutdown the system for one particular work. No need of Bypass line Convenient, no need for massive draining of fluid. Economical DISADVANTAGES
