Patras
The New Archaeological Museum of Patras is a
museum focusing on exhibiting various archaeological
findings discovered in the region of Achaia dating from
the Mycenaean to the Late Roman period.

45

New Archaeological Museum of

Patras
The museum occupies an
area of 28,000m, with its
interiors reaching 8,000m.
The surroundings of the
museum include a fountain
of 500m, a metal dome
and open spaces with trees
and flowers. The museum
houses four exhibitions,
three
of
which
are
permanent and one current.
46

New Archaeological Museum of

Patras
First Hall (Private Life)
The first and largest section
exhibits objects from daily life,
tools, toiletries and jewellery
from the Mycenaean, the
Geometric, the Archaic, the
Hellenistic and the Roman
periods in Greece.

47

New Archaeological Museum of

Patras
Second Hall (Public Life)

In the hall of public life the

habits and activities of people
from the Mycenaean period to
the Hellenistic and the Roman
periods are presented through
beetles,
statues,
coins,
amphorae, musical instruments,
etc.

48

New Archaeological Museum of

Patras
Third Hall (Necropolis)
The section of the Necropolis is
dedicated to tombs and objects
which were discovered in Patras
and the widest region of Achaia.
The funerary architecture and its
evolution from the Prehistoric to
the Roman times is also
presented in this hall.

49

Archaeological site of Voudeni

Voudeni, located 7 km northeast of Patras is one
of the most important Mycenaean settlements of
Achaia. It probably formed the nucleus of prehistoric
Patras and perhaps it can be identified as ancient
Messatida, one of three neighbouring villages that
evolved to form the city of Patras.

50

Archaeological site of Voudeni

The Mycenaean cemetery,
consists of carved chamber
shaped tombs, covering an
area of 16 acres. It is
located on the hillside at
the
position
"Almond
Trees" in the west of the
modern village of Voudeni.

51

Archaeological site of Voudeni

To the west of the
cemetery and less than 1
km away is the hill "Bortzi"
where
a
prehistoric
settlement
is
being
excavated and has partly
been researched. The
currently available data
confirm the continuous
habitation of the hill from
the Mycenaean period to
Roman times.

52

Roman Odeon of Patras

The Roman Odeon of Patras is a magnificent
building from the Roman times which today has been
reconstructed and is used for musical concerts and
cultural
events.
It is located west to the Castle, in the upper part of the
city next to the Roman Arena and is surrounded by
Palaion Patron Germanou street, Sotiriadou street,
Pantocratoros street and Saint Georges Square. It has a
southern orientation and it is lined with bricks.
Nowadays, the stairs are lined with marble.
53

Roman Odeon of Patras

The Odeon was probably
built during the reign of the
Roman Emperor Augustus.
Pausanias reports that it
was older than the Odeon of
Herodes Atticus, and stood
right next to the Roman
market of the city. It was
elegantly decorated but not
as elegantly as the Herodion
which he considered to be
more elegant.
54

Roman Odeon of Patras

In 1889, it was decided to
tear down the hill Stranis
and use its soils in banking
up the harbor which was
constructed at that time.
During these earthmoving
the Odeon was discovered.

55

Roman Odeon of Patras

Over the years the Odeon was damaged by

natural disasters and raids and was covered by earth.
Currently, the Odeon is open to visitors and is often
used for music concerts and cultural events.

56

Pantokratoras Church of Patras

The Church of Pantokratoras (Almighty Patron)

was built on the ruins of an ancient temple of Olympian
Zeus
in
about
900
AD.
It is the first cathedral in Patras of Byzantine
architecture and a duplicate of the church of Hagia
Sophia in Constantinople.

57

Pantokratoras Church of Patras

The church is distinguished
for its beautiful domes,
which are externally covered
by lead and also for the
stunning interior decoration.
It is located beneath the
castle of Patras and it is a
benchmark of the upper city.

58

Castle of Patras
The Castle of Patras was built during the second
half of the 6th century on the ruins of the ancient
Acropolis. Located on a low hill of Panachaiko mountain
it is 800 metres from the shore. The walls enclose an
area of 22,725m which consists of a triangular outer
enclosure reinforced with towers and bastions. It was
originally protected by a deep moat and an inner
courtyard that rises in NE angle which is also
surrounded by a moat.

59

Castle of Patras
Manufactured by emperor
Justinian,
after
the
devastating earthquake of
551, for the defense of the
area and its residents. It was
made from building materials
of the ancient Acropolis.
In the centuries that followed,
it remained continuously in
use for the defense of the city,
but also as an administrative
and military centre.
60

Castle of Patras
Since 1973 the castle is
under the supervision of
6th Ephorate of Byzantine
Antiquities.
A movable theatre (640
seats) is located inside the
enclosure which hosts
cultural
events
every
summer.
61

Apollon Theatre
The theatre "Apollon" was constructed in 1872
according to designs by the great German architect
Ernst Ziller. It is a miniature of La Scala in Milan and it
is one of the oldest surviving proscenium theatres of
neoclassic years and the most impressive architectural
ornament of Patras. The Apollon theatre is the main
stage of the Municipal Regional Theatre of Patras since
the establishment of the latter in 1988.

62

Apollon Theatre
The Apollon Theatre was
founded on 11 February,
1871 and was completed
on October 10, 1872. Its
interiors include the stalls
with 156 seats and 53
boxes on two balconies.
The stage is 13.5 metres
wide and 7.5 metres deep.

63

Apollon Theatre
The first performance at the
Apollon Theatre took place
on 10 October, 1872 showing
the melodrama Un balo in
Mashera
by
Verdi.
Today,
the
Municipal
Regional Theatre of Patras
puts on performances on a
regular basis at the Apollon
Theatre of Patras. Also, the
beautiful theatre is used for
cultural
events
during
Carnival time.
64

Xanthi

Folk Museum of Xanthi

The Folk Museum of Xanthi
was
founded
by
the
Progressive Union of Xanthi
(FEX). Due to its small space
and
the
need
to
accommodate a big number
of exhibits, it was expanded
at Kougioumtzoglou and
Kaloudi mansions at the
beginning of 19th century.

66

Folk Museum of Xanthi

The building is one of the
representative samples of a
certain type of houses which
began to be built in the town
of Xanthi during the last
period of the Ottoman
occupation from 1830 and
on.

67

Folk Museum of Xanthi

The
internal
decoration
underlines the aesthetical,
economical and social level of
the residents. The murals of
the museum, masterpieces of
Bavarian
and
German
craftsmen, date back to 1880.

68

Folk Museum of Xanthi

The permanent collections
have
been
preserved
thanks to donators who
contributed up to 80% of
the expenses. Nowadays
there are collections that
depict and give elements of
the public and the private
life, the social, economical
and religious life of the
people of the town and the
country at the beginning of
the 20th century.
69

Tobacco Stores
Between the 18th and the
19th centuries the town of
Xanthi, although under the
Turkish
occupation,
becomes famous thanks to
its rare aromatic tobacco
which goes beyond the
borders of the Ottoman
Empire and travels in the
Balkan peninsula, in Europe
and Constantinople.

70

Tobacco Stores
Under the permission of the
Sultan, tobacco cultivation of
the species of basma brought
economic prosperity and what
we now call Old Town is
being built by the leading class.
The buildings where the
processing and the storage of
the famous tobacco took place
are named tobacco stores or
generally termed as industrial
buildings.
71

Tobacco Stores
At the beginning of the 20th
century Xanthi was one of
the
seven
richest
municipalities in Greece,
although, still under the
Ottoman occupation.

72

Tobacco Stores
The decline of the Tobacco
Stores starts in 1912 with
the
1st
Bulgarian
domination in Thrace and
the Balkan wars. Xanthis
golden age officially ends
right after the end of WW
II, when most of them were
demolished.

73

1st Primary School

It was built by the tobacco
merchant Matsini in 1863. In
1874 Matsinis left a fortune
in
his
will
for
the
maintenance of the school.
He was honoured as a
national donor by the
Xanthians for his offer. In the
course of time the school
has changed names such as
the town school, girls
school,
educational
establishment of Xanthi.
74

It is situated at the corner of

Constantinou Palaiologou and
Antica streets, opposite the
Municipal Gallery.
The owner of the mansion
used to be A. Kaloudis but
today it belongs to the
Municipality of Xanthi. The
arcade entrance as well as the
extraordinary
painted
decoration on the outside of
the
building
are
very
impressive.
The building is strongly
characterised
by
central
European
architectural
features.

Kaloudi Mansion

75

Old Town Hall of Xanthi

It is situated on the corner of
Mayor Filippos Amiridis and
Mavromichali streets at a
central spot of the old town.
It was built around 1830 by a
tobacco merchant named
Moses. It was later sold to I.
Orfanidis. In 1926 it was
bought by the Municipality
of Xanthi and until 2013 it
was used to accommodate
the citys services.

76

Old Town Hall of Xanthi

The building has many
romanic features and was
built with local sandstone
from Mandra quarries. It has
rich internal decoration and
it is well proportioned both
on its inner and outer
surface.

77

Chasirtzoglou Mansion
The mansion was built in
1830 by the Chasirtzoglou
family, who were tobacco
merchants. After 1900 the
building was used by the
Austrian consulate and at the
same time, as the house of
Menandros
Chasirtzoglou
who was the Consul.
In 1984 it was bought by
Asimidis who restored it to
use it as his house and in
1993 it was sold to the
Municipality of Xanthi.
78

Chasirtzoglou Mansion
It is a two-storeyed house built
with stone work and bagthati.
The ground floor windows
have a linear outline whereas
those of the 1st floor are
decorated in relief. Above the
main entrance there is a
fanlight. The corners of the
ground floor are highly
decorated. The building is a
sample of the architecture of
that period.

79

The Holy Monastery of Pammegiston

Taxiarchon
It is situated at the north-west
of the town, in the forest and
in
an
altitude
of
approximately 150 meters. It
is dated back in the late 9th
century. After the Minor Asia
destruction in 1922, it hosted
many orphans. Few years
later it was used by the army
as barracks.
Its main church was built in
1974, after a fire which
destroyed
all
the
old
buildings.
Today
the
Monastery
hosts
the
Ecclesiastic School.
80

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Kalamou

It is situated at the north of
Xanthi, not far away from
the town in an altitude of
170 meters.
Tradition has it that the
Monastery was built during
the iconoclasm years (726843) by iconolater monks.
The building dates back to
the beginning of the 20th
century. The name of
Kalamou or Kalamiotissa
attributed to Virgin Mary
(Panagia) stems from the site
that Her icon was found.
81

The Holy Monastery of Panagia

Archaggeliotissa
It is situated at the north-east
of Xanthi in an altitude of 160
meters.
The main church is dedicated to
the presentation of Virgin Mary.
The Monastery dates back to
the 16th century or earlier. Its
name stems from a small
miracle icon of the 16th century
which depicts Virgin Mary with
the two archangels Michael and
Gabriel, standing by Her.
Today the Ecclesiastic Museum
of the Metropolis of Xanthi is
hosted in the Monastery.
