ABOUT THE DISEASE
This disease is a large swelling
or lump on the front of the neck
(the throat) and is due to the
growth of thyroid abnormalities.
Most disease is caused by a
deficiency of iodine in food.

EPIDIMIOLOGY
Paramixovirus reservoir of the disease only
in humans.

Transmitted by salyvary infected secretions
or urine during the six days before
parotitis up to two weeks.

Incubation of the disease between 12-25 days
at the peak age of 10-19 years.

CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
Salivary adenitis: parotitis usually
characterized by sudden pain, skin glan
no worms or red (vs. bacterial parotitis)
38-39 C then fever, malaise, headache,
anorexia.

Epididymoorchitis: 20-35% of postpubertal
males, usually 7-10 days after parotitis
with the recrudescence of malaise,
chills, fever; half followed by
testicular atrophy, sterility if
bilateral atrophy.

CNS: Points and a half with goiter showed an
increase of cells in the CSF, usually 3-10
days after onset of parotitis; rare -
cerebellar ataxia was encephalitis, poliio
syndromes such as paralysis, transverse
myelitis,.

pancreatitis: abdominal pain and tenderness
rarely complicated by shock or pseudokista; to
see an increase in amylase with parotitis only
(but increases the lipase only with
pancreatitis).

Other: subacute thyroiditis,
dacryoadenitis, neuritis, optic
iritis, conjunctivitis,
myocarditis, hepatitis,
thrombocytopenic purpura,
interstitial pneuomonia, migratory
polyarthritis (esp.males age 20-30)

DIAGNOSIS
Laboratory findings: parotitis
complicated relative lymphocytosis,
leukocytosis characterized by orchitis,
amylase increased, CSF: leukocyte 1000-
2000 with initial PMNs (higher than
aseptic meningitis with polio-coxsackie
echoviruses, -, and).

Cultures of blood, throat swabs, CSF,
urine, in tissue culture,
immunofluorescence postive in 2-3 d.

Serology: increased four-fold titer by
ELISA, CF (S initial antigen, V later)
TREATMENT
Treatment for chronic diseases that
already this is usually with surgery.
However, in the homeopathic treatment of
goiter could be cured without surgery.
With homeopathic medicine to decrease
swelling of the thyroid gland and over
time will be lost. Thyroid hormone
production will be organized.

Prednisone 60 mg qd tapered over 7-10 d
may give symptomatic relief in orchitis.
Prevention : Live attenuated vaccine
(0.5 Ml 1M) after 1 year of age ;
contraindicated if hypersensitivity
reaction. febrile illness, malignancy,
pregnancy.
