The Asian Pacific Health Foundation has been working to improve hepatitis B testing and linkage to care in San Diego County through community outreach events. From 2003-2010 they screened 2884 people and found a 6.8% positive rate. From 2011-2013 they screened 822 people through 25 community events and found a 5.48% positive rate. In collaboration with UCSD, they screened 1071 people from 2012-2013 through a CDC grant and found a 7.7% positive rate. Their goals are to increase education and awareness, better understand barriers to screening and treatment, and provide additional health screenings at events to increase turnout for hepatitis B screening.

Objective #1: Increasing Education and Awareness UCSD School of Pharmacy Students participated in Barriers Study: Sandy Chong since 2011 CDC In 2013: Thuy Nguyen, Lillian Nguyen, Xuan Phan on demographics of persons screened for Hepatitis B, Point of Care tests for Hep B and C at clinical sites vs. community settings. CDC 2 nd year extension was approved.
Objective #2: Continue collecting surveys to better understand API behavior, and connect to hepatitis B. The goal here is to better understand barriers involved in screening and treatment and how to mitigate them so that more high-risked individuals can be helped.
Objective #3 By including other screenings at our events, the turnout rate for hepatitis B screening increases substantially. We collaborate with UCSD School of Pharmacy and UCSD School of Medicine to provide free screenings for diabetes, glaucoma, cholesterol and hypertension concurrently with hepatitis B screening.
