VOLLEYBALL DIGGING

SKILLS
Uthaya Chanthira Kumar A/L Muniandy

Part one
The first part is the ready position, students are told about the hand hold. The
first stage is to put one hand up, and lay the other hand up on top of it. Then
bend your hand/fingers so it looks like you are holding water in your hand.
Put your thumbs next to each other on top. The wrists are slightly abducted
with elbows are extended and shoulders are flexed by keeping chest high
with your arms need to be level with your shoulders, parallel to the floor.
Secondly, put your feet shoulder width apart and keep your knees bent and
with your weight forward by remain in a low stance for your ready position.
By doing so, you are low to the ground and ready for any type of hit and to be
able to extend yourself to the floor if necessary to retrieve the ball. In
addition, you need to make sure that you are on the balls of your feet and not
flat footed you can spring forward or to the side to get the ball. Bend at the
waist to put your shoulders over your knees and keep your arms out to the
side just wider than your knees and the eyes watching the ball forward (up) at
all time. Students have to be practicing the position with moving their arms
upwards as though hitting the ball at the wrist part. By doing so, they are able
to coordinate their body positioning for retrieve the ball.

In the second part of learning the digging skill, the ball is
introduced. The ball is tossed to the students gently at the
waist level at 2-3 meter away. The student is ask to do
exactly what had been learned in the first part that is,
getting into the correct position and pushing up with their
whole body from lower, rather than simply swinging their
arm. All these are done without any forward movement
from the students. Teachers need to spend some time at
this stage as mastering the individual part at this stage is
important to link up with the third part that would be
introduced later. At this stage, it is important that students
get specific feedback of their performance in order to
make any adjustments in the next trial. It is also important
to emphasize on the arms flections and the knees and eyes
still focused on the ball and maintaining balance at all
time.

Part two
Before introducing the third part, teachers need to asses that the
students have some mastery of digging the ball with bring the arm and
body upward introduced in the second part. In the third stage, the
actual digging is done. After some practice of stationary digging at the
beginning of the part, students were asked to move forwards when the
ball is tossed forward to dig. Once the student digs the ball, he/she
should return move back and get into the ready position. If the ball is
tossed at the right side, the right foot moves forward to cover the right
side and vice versa for the left side and the student back to the ready
position. Initially they should start out by just digging and keeping the
ball move upward on a step by step basis. Ensure that, after extending
their whole body for the first dig, the children quickly get back into a
crouched position. More practice trials should be introduced by the
teacher to make sure the students who make any errors during this
practice stage can be corrected. The correction is seen as an important
aspect of learning the digging skill.
Part three
This step in teaching the digging skill is the most critical part as
the students are able to use what they have learned from the
previous part one and two. Once the students are able to
demonstrate that they can move forward and dig the ball higher
upward, then for motivational reasons, the students should try
to dig balls from different angle successfully. Once they are able
to dig balls from different angle, they can then shift the digging
into a steep ball digging. The teacher should still emphasize on
the arms flections and the knees and eyes still focused on the
ball and maintaining balance at all time. Later, when they are
comfortable, speed can be increased.
