CURRENT TRENDS IN

PHILIPPINE EDUCATION
( RIZAL TIME K12 )
INTRODUCTION
During the Pre-Spanish period , education was still
decentralized . The Children were provided with
more vocational training with fewer academics
.Philippine schools were headed by parents or by
their tribal tuitor .
When the Spanish first arrived in Manila , they were
surprised to find a population with a literacy rate
higher than that of Madrid .

1898
The new well educated middle class of Filipinos
would later the Philippine Independence movement
using the Spanish language as their common
language .
Among the Illustrados who had also studied in
Spanish were Jose Rizal , who were to lead later the
cause of Filipino self government and independence .
1942
During the world war the department was
recognized once again through the Japanese
Military Order No. 2 , splitting the department
into the Ministry of education and the Ministry
of health . Under Japanese , the teaching of
Tagalog , Philippine history , and character
education was given priority .
1947
By virtue of Executive Order No. 49 by Press. Manuel
Roxas , the department was recognized to the
Department of Education . During this period , the
regulation and supervision of public and private
schools belonged to the Bureau of Public and Private
School .
1970S
Upon the start of Martial Law , it became the
department of education and Culture , and
subsequently recognized into the Ministry of
Education and Culture , due to the shift to a
parliamentary system of government .
Thirteen regional offices were created and
major organizational changes were
implemented in the educational system .
1990S
The structure of DECS as embodied in EO 117 has
practically remained unchanged , when the
Commission on Higher Education CHED was
established and in the Technical education and Skills
development Authority TESDA was established to
supervise tertiary degree programs and non-degree
technical vocational programs respectively .
2001
The Governance of Basic Education Act.
Was passed renaming the DECS to the
Department of Education and redefining
the role of field offices , which include
regional offices , division offices , district
offices , and schools .
2010S AND THE K-12
In 2011 , DepEd started to implement the new k-12
educational system , which includes the new curricula
for all schools. In this system , education is now
compulsary . The implement of the K-12 program
four Phases during the implement of the new system .
1.Lying the Foundation
2. Complete Migration
3. Complete Reform
4. Modeling and migration
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
In Grade 1 , the subject areas of English
and Filipino are taught , with a focus on
Oral fluency
In Grade 4 the subject areas of English
and Filipino are gradually introduced ,
but now , as language of instruction.
In High school , Biology is taught in 2

yr,
Chemistry in 3
rd
yr. Physics in 4
th
yr .
