Part A (2marks)
1.What is the need for Scattering matrix?
2. Write down the ABCD matrix for a transformer with N:1 turns ratio
3. What is velocity Modulation?
4. What is convection current?
5.Define Insertion loss
6. What is the use of Network Analyzer?
7.What is Gunn Effect?
8. What is avalanche multiplication?
9. Mention few substrates for striplines
10.Justify why microstrip lines cannot support pure TEM mode

Question 2 is a difficult and if the students had
written the ABCD matrix, we had awarded 1
mark.

Question 10 is difficult but if the word Quasi
was mentioned we had awarded 1 mark.
Part B (16 Mark)
11. (a) Using field theory concepts, verify for any N port,
s parameter satisfies the lossless and reciprocity
property.
11. (b) Find the ABCD matrix for the two port network

12.(a) What is transit time effect ? How can that be effect
be reflected with two cavity klystron.
12. (b) Explain the working principle of Magnetron

13.(a) With neat block diagram explain how insertion
loss and attenuation loss can be measured
13.(b)Explain how network analyzer can be used to
measure S parameter.
14(a). Compare and contrast IMPATT,TRAPATT
and BARITT diodes.
14(b). Explain the operation of parametric
amplifier and give the manley rowe power
relations.
15(a). Calculate the width and length of a
microstrip line for 50 ohm and 90^ phase shift
at 2.5 Ghz. Thickness d=0.127 with er = 2.20
15(b). Find the width for a 50 ohm copper strip
line conductor with b=0.32cm and er=2.20. if
the dielectric loss tangent is 0.001 and the
frequency is 10Ghz. Calculate the attenuation
in db. Thickness t=0.01mm.

All questions are from the syllabus.
