LABORATORY AND

DEMONSTRATION METHOD
LABORATORY AND DEMONSTRATION METHOD
At the end of the discussion, the students will be able
to:
Classify the different types of laboratory and demonstration
method

Identify the different steps of laboratory and demonstration
method

Differentiate laboratory and demonstration method

LABORATORY METHOD
Utilizes raw data or material things to produce better understanding of
the subject matter or lesson.

Learning by doing.

Used to designate a teaching procedure that uses experimentation
LABORATORY METHOD
Aims
LABORATORY METHOD
To give firsthand experience in the laboratory which may increase
student interest

To provide student participation in original research

To develop skill in the use of laboratory equipment and
instruments

Two types
LABORATORY METHOD
Experimental - aims to train pupils in problem solving with
incidental acquisition of information and motor skills.

Observational - the acquisition of facts is the dominant aim of the
method.
Advantages
LABORATORY METHOD
Applies learning by doing

Develops the power of observation and reasoning

Develops scientific attitude

Advantages

LABORATORY METHOD
Gives an understanding of what research is and how to apply
scientific method of research

Gives training in organizing data

Preparation for solving real life problems

Disadvantages
LABORATORY METHOD

Uneconomical way of learning

Does not give much training in verbal expression which makes the
lesson mechanical

LABORATORY METHOD
preparation
actual work period
CULMINATING
ACTIVITES
Steps in Laboratory Method
Preparation
LABORATORY METHOD
Review past lesson.

Raising and defining the work to be done

Expected learning outcomes

Planning
Actual work period
LABORATORY METHOD
Work under instructors supervision

The students may be assigned individually, by group or a
committee in which the tasks are sometimes divided by its
members

A single study may last for few days
Actual work period
LABORATORY METHOD

Those who work fast may be given incentives or additional
assignment for additional credits

Culminating activities
LABORATORY METHOD
Reporting what is worked on by individuals or groups in plenary
session of the class

The reports may be compiled and reproduced for the benefit of the
class to review for an evaluation or test.

After each report, questions may be asked concerning the report

LECTURE DEMONSTRATION
METHOD
Combination of lecture and demonstration

This method of teaching is used frequently in biological and physical
sciences

With this method, if it is executed properly, it enables the student to
understand the lesson within a given period of time
LECTURE DEMONSTRATION
METHOD
It is as effective as the individual laboratory method

Better compared to mere oral explanaition
LECTURE DEMONSTRATION
METHOD
Aims
LECTURE DEMONSTRATION
METHOD
To teach a skill, concept or principle
To demonstrate delicate and dangerous works involving careful
manipulation.
To let teachers participate in demonstration classrooms to help
improve their own teaching strategies.
Types
LECTURE DEMONSTRATION
METHOD
Expository designed to impart information directly or to
illustrate a skill as students observe.

Questioning designed to foster discovery of a concept or its
application.
LECTURE DEMONSTRATION
METHOD
Steps in Lecture Demonstration Method
introduction
development
evaluation
Advantages
LECTURE DEMONSTRATION
METHOD
It follows a systematic procedure.
Possible wastage of time, effort and resources will be avoided.
It will not result to trial and error.
Curiosity and keen observing ability are instilled.
Disadvantages
LECTURE DEMONSTRATION
METHOD
Tends to foster passiveness and teacher-dependence on the part of
the students.

Becomes a failure when the number of students is greater.
Disadvantages
LECTURE DEMONSTRATION
METHOD
It needs a lot of time for instructions and demonstration.

It requires a knowledgable and expert demonstrator.
The chief difference between the two is that:
DIFFEERENCES
in the laboratory method, all the learners perform the experiment
and learning by doing.

In the demonstration method, the teacher does the experiment
while the class observes.
