Driver alcohol detection system for safety.
http://ncadd.org/in-the-news/322-new-
technology-aims-to-prevent-drunk-driving
The technology could be built into a vehicle's
dashboard or controls
It would check a driver's blood alcohol level,
and would not start if the level were above
the legal limit
The new technology being developed would
not require blowing into a tube. It could be
embedded in a starter button or shift lever.
A proposed federal transportation bill would
give the NHTSA's alcohol detector program
$24 million over two years.

Nissan has also been conducting their own
concept for a prevention car, and both of
these systems use similar approaches.
Hi-sensitivity alcohol sensors are built into the
transmission shift knob and seats.
They are able to detect the presence of
alcohol in the perspiration of the drivers
palm.
a facial monitoring system monitors the
consciousness and signs of drowsiness of the
driver
the driving behavior monitoring detects any
distraction or swerving.
If any of these are triggered some of the
following would occur: seatbelt mechanism
grasps the driver, the transmission locks, or a
voice alert goes off (Nissan).

they become drowsy or inattentive

Lane Departure Warning system to help prevent run-off-road
accidents
City Safety helps avoid or reduce the consequences of a collision at
low speed by automatically braking the car and at the same time
restricting the throttle. In addition, the brake lights are activated to
warn following traffic. City Safety is already fitted as standard on
the new Volvo XC60. The system is programmed to respond to
vehicles in front that are either stationary or are moving in the
same direction.
Based on the cars own speed and the gap to the vehicle in front,
the system calculates the braking speed needed to avoid a collision.
If the calculated braking force exceeds a given level without the
driver reacting, the danger of a collision is regarded as imminent
and the system automatically steps in.

The Connected Vehicle Safety Pilot
Model Deployment Program
car2X technology
Field tests of technology the connects vehicles to other
vehicles and road side infrastructure, known as car2X
technology, are being run in Germany and the USA. In the
Frankfurt-Rhine-Main area of Germany a field test called
simTD was conducted during the last quarter of 2012. The
purpose of the field test was primarily to investigate how
new car2X technology an support both road safety and
traffic efficiency. Information was exchanged between test
vehicles, and between road users and traffic, road users
were notified of potentially dangerous situations to enable
them to react in time and appropriately, and support was
provided to road users in adapting their routes to avoid a
hazard altogether.
Curtain air bags
Usually mounted in a vehicle's headliner above
the windows, curtain air bags deploy across the
windows in a crash to protect passengers' heads
in both front and rear seats. They also help shield
occupants from flying debris, and can keep
people from being ejected during a rollover. The
better head-protection systems offer a safety-
canopy system, which automatically deploys the
side-curtain air bags if the system detects the
vehicle beginning to roll over.

Brake assist
This system senses when emergency braking is
required by gauging how fast the pedal is
depressed. When panic braking is detected, brake
assist builds up boost to use the vehicles
maximum braking capability even if the driver
doesnt push on the pedal hard enough, which
might happen in some crash situations.

Active Safety in action: Forward Collision Warning
Forward Collision Warning (FCW) utilizes a sensor,
usually radar or a camera, to detect objects, including
vehicles on the road, and alerts drivers when there is
imminent danger of a collision. By predicting collision
and alerting drivers beforehand, the safety feature
could potentially have a great impact on reducing
accidents, since, according to a report from the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
report in 2001, such systems could theoretically
eliminate 3774 percent of rear-end collisions.
