32- Jane confronts St.

John about
his love for Rosamond.
He does something weird (big
shock).
While drawing Rosamonds portrait, Jane
encounters St. John. Jane tells him that he
should marry Rosamond.

St. John actually admits to loving Rosamond,
but as mentioned in Fridays discussion, he is
committed to his holy mission and will not allow
earthly pleasures to stand in the way.
Before he leaves, St. John tears the
corner of Janes drawing. This baffles
her.

Despite the fact that Jane has taken
steps to conceal her identity, it all
unravels in this chapter.

St. John actually tells Jane her own story.

He tells her that it is really important that
Jane Eyre be found.
Jane assumes that it has something to
do with Rochester, but St. John informs
her that Mr. Briggs (remember him?) is
looking for Jane to inform her that her
Uncle John has died, leaving her 20,000
pounds.

She then reveals herself to him.

How did he figure it out?

The piece of paper he ripped from Janes
drawing contained her signature.

It turns out Jane is the Rivers cousin!!!
Its what she always wanted!!!!
A family.

She is so pumped that she decides to divide
her inheritance between her cousins and
herself.

That 5,000 pounds each!!! A handsome sum
in those days!!!
St. John and Janes relationship grows.
She is strangely drawn to him.

He asks her to be his wife and to follow him to India as
a missionary.

Jane agrees to go to India, but declines his marriage
proposal.

St. John apparently doesnt handle rejection well.
No Jane no ; this world is not the scene
of fruition, do not attempt to make it so:
nor of rest; do not turn slothful

He springs to life.
St. John finds no enjoyment in the
company of others. Jane does.
He is only happy when he is serving a
higher purpose.

say yes?
Oh! I will give my heart to God. You do
not want it!

He tells Jane that denying him is like
denying the Christian faith!! Wow.

St. John continues to pressure Jane to marry
him, and he isnt exactly nice about it.

It becomes obvious that St. John doesnt love
Jane, but only sees her as a necessary tool to
aid him in his missionary work.

What would a marriage to St. John offer Jane?

Diana tells Jane that she would be a fool to go to India
with St. John.

St. John and Jane become embroiled in an intense
conversation and Jane is almost swayed by his
powers.

Then..she hears a voice on the wind, calling her
name.

Who do you think this voice belongs to?

Jane thinks that something bad must
have happened.
